I think in VR, katanas could be interesting. They don't have the chopping weight Western swords do, instead they handle like a really long razor. Having to pull your slices in VR to make them effective could be really cool. Also having them break easy from being made of pig iron would be great. Hard to use, less reach, and more fragile is a great way to portray grorious Nipponese steer

Actually no. English Longbows were the most powerful ranged weapon before guns. Crossbows had high as fuck draw weight, but were much too small to actually impart all that force to the arrow. So only a fraction of that draw weight converted into power.

Crossbows were widely spread mainly because they were so easy to use. Bows required a lot of fucking training, but a trained archer would be better than a trained crossbow man.

In a way he's sort of right, most cultures don't have rigid distinctions for what constitutes a sword, knife, etc. based on length but the Japs do. A tanto is a shaku at most, which using modern shaku is basically 12". A wakizashi is between 12 and 24 inches. Longer than that and you get into katana territory although there are a million modifiers and things to take into account beyond just length, IIRC even the way a sword is worn affects how they refer to it.
