Now this is an extreme example, but even with smaller playerbases, the losses pile up.
To counteract the loss in sales, publishers try to jew you out of every cent they can, IE lootboxes, microtransactions, DLCs, etc.

Honestly I think piracy is a lot more devastating for niche games than it is for big releases. Big releases will get plenty of casualbux, niche releases have to rely on word of mouth from savvy consumers. But said savvy consumers are a lot more likely to know about and partake in piracy.
