I don't know, last 10 years i'm getting pretty tired of fantasy. I can barely name 3 games that wren't fantasy or post apoc which is essentially a fantasy at least the way it's done.

The thing I hate the most about the show was the first season or two were pretty good adaptations, so they made me hopeful for it, then the writers decided to start making their own shit up and ignoring the source material.

That was actually his goal from the start. Tolkien wrote middle earth in order to create an English mythology that was more interesting than the Arthurian legend. The sheer volume (and occasional burst of true quality) of the derivative works is a testament to his success and I cant imagine the man being anything less than ecstatic at just how widely and how completely his world has been adopted.

True but it's all been downhill since then, a lot of the HBO team past this point have moved on to other things but also you can tell Dan and Dave never had the passion for the story past A Storm of Swords, they even said in an interview that a main goal of theirs was to just reach the point of the Red Wedding. Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

In real life, real-life kings had real-life problems to deal with. Just being a good guy was not the answer. You had to make hard, hard decisions. Sometimes what seemed to be a good decision turned around and bit you in the ass; it was the law of unintended consequences. I’ve tried to get at some of these in my books. My people who are trying to rule don’t have an easy time of it. Just having good intentions doesn’t make you a wise king

I've never watched GoT or read the books but I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of a FromSoftware open world action RPG. The Souls series relies heavily on guiding the player along a path and forcing them to engage the enemies in relatively narrow spaces so it will be interesting to see how they tackle something like this. Until Sekiro their games didn't even have a vertical jump feature, just horizontal almost 2D jumps and even those were rare.

GRRM criticised Tolkein's empty/fairytale world building because he didn't go into the details of the world and just stated "Aragorn will be a good king" and he brought up topics that were simply 'brushed aside' by Tolkein in order to maintain his story's integrity as a happy ending disney fic (what will happen to gorillions of orcs, how does Aragorn rule, etc)
