The grail takes the person from a set time in their life.
I.E., it can take someone early on in life when they're radically different from how they were later. Its like Being able to choose to pick Anakin skywalker or Darth vader.

It’s related to their summoning. Basically summoning in the full hero and keeping them materialized in the world as a familiar servant requires too much mana. Instead, they materialize inside a cookie cutter class which naturally nerfs them a bit but in return lets them stay in the world easier. Many servants can appear in multiple classes, depending on how many weapons they utilized in their legends but some forms will be closer to their true power than others. For example, Gilgamesh can manifest in any of the classes but Archer suits him best since he always had a habit of throwing his treasure.

In the case of Gilles, the compatibility with his master caused him to manifest as he did into a caster. When no catalyst is present the summoning is basically a personality test.

We have no idea who the Grand Saber is. We only know Solomon and Merlin qualify for Grand Caster, and King Hassan qualifies for Grand Assassin, and that Solomon and King Assassin have abandoned their positions.

You can beat the game with literally any party you want, it isn't a "Roll to win" game at all, its barely gacha. The only reason people roll the gacha is "I want the shiny new thing of the month". Rolling the gacha isn't necessary, people have literally beaten the story without ever rolling it before.

By the time chapter 5 of FGO comes around, its literally just a VN wearing the suit of a mobage. Nasu realized he could pretty much just write the same thing he does for novels, but turn it superficially into a mobile game. Which is why the quality really improves after awhile. There's like three or four chapters that are about as good as anything he's written before, some of those chapters are getting adapted into anime soon.

Long as you can make it through the painful first few chapters, the game doesn't have a bad story at all. Although sometimes the editing could use some work since they gave a certain writer a little too much freedom, and they end up with shit like Septem or Agatha.

Fate was never good but unironically. The series was sloppily written and the characterization was shoddy since day one.
