Have there ever been games where updates are mandatory? Like the game wont start unless you download the patches? And I mean the devs purposely making it that way, not because of some game ruining bug or something.

Sounds to me like people are either trying to play online-only games which need to connect in order to work at all or they are just not using offline mode proper. You definitely don't need online to enter offline mode.

No, steam has offline mode. It is that some games don't allow you to play it offline. At that point it is a "feature" on the game's end, not the platform (steam).

Can you just install it, enter the cd-key and play without steam, or any other launcher or software that connects to the internet for verification? You buy a piece of paper with the steam key on it. It's a digital-only game with an extra step.

A big problem with steam is that it is unironically too liberal, so a ton of shit that happens on the platform is blamed on valve.
For example some games can't be played offline and people blame valve for it, when it is 100% the publisher's fault. Gaben should just drop the "b urself" meme and enforce some things.
