Skyrim has this same problem. You don't need to blow yourself up, just open up the console and player.kill

The reason this works is that certain broken scripts causing the crash are only ended when the player dies. If you don't die often enough, in either Skyrim or Fallout 3, you'll eventually crashes on save.
