Couple of points.
There are a lot of decent western game voice actors and they can perform adequately in Japanese games. This is true.
There are not enough decent voice directors willing to give them enough takes to get their line delivery correct though. The voices themselves aren't bad but it's very common for them to deliver lines awkwardly or in ways that don't match the context of the situation. Because the direction is lacking. That's the primary problem with JP dubs in games at the moment.
Also the fact that singing is probably going to be in the game adds another huge barrier for the talent. There are plenty of Japanese VAs who can sing because of how prevalent singing already is in the market over there. That same culture isn't present in America, actors don't know how to sing.

The only main games in the series that were on the Saturn were 1 and 2. Dreamcast got rereleases of 1 and 2 along with the premieres of 3 and 4, the PS2 got a remastered version of 1 and the original release of 5, and the Wii got a port of 5 later.

Partially. If you say and do the right things to one of the team members in the story portions, it gives them an effectiveness boost in battle, and if in battle you block attacks meant for them, it has the same boost on their affection.

The mech SRPG gameplay in Sakura Wars is actually really fun. I've played through 5, and a big chunk of 3 and 4 with one of my best friends. For those wondering the game is typically divided into chapters. Each chapter sort of feels like an anime episode where you interact with characters, something happens, then each chapter culminates with a mech battle.

Compared to other VNs and dating sims, the Sakura Wars games were always very classy. The female protags are treated very well Not much in actual fan service, but the interactions with the interactions and stories are cute.

One thing I liked is that the running around between battles where you get close to girls and do the story events, etc feels very sandboxy in other Sakura Taisen games. There isn't really any tedium to it like there is persona. There's a surprising amount of variance in the way things happen depending on who you waifu. I remember seeing my buddies Sakura Taisen 4 file, and his romances all the way to the first game impacted scenes in the game in some way even though they were different girls. I think Sumire lamented things didn't go further.

Are there any dating sim games worth playing except Sakura Wars? I always imagined genre as normal VN but with 3-4 choices to choose your girl-route, but it's actually super fun when you have dialogue choices every 2 minutes like in ST.

Most visual novels have very few choices and don't branch much.

It's a lot of work, probably. Lots of choices that all lead to different outcomes, plus a ton of girls.

People don't realise that a disproportionate number of Japanese translators tend to be women. They're more creatively oriented and more likely to actually learn the language, and they tend to get pretty fucking nuts about the stuff they like and waste a lot of time working on it. It's the same thing with Japan's doujin industry, a lot of artists are chicks.

Translating is only half the battle. There are a ton of PS1 games that have full translations, and have had them for years, but nobody with the hacking skills has ever come around and put the text in the game because it's an undertaking on par with, or even more of a pain in the dick than actually translating these games. It's easy to get the text out, but getting it back in takes years.

Yeah, that's true. Each developer has its own compression technology, or a unique way of coding it's graphical libraries. It's a nightmare. Slowbeef wrote about the way he hacked Policenauts for the ps and it was basically brute force and trying to reverse engineer by interpreting the assembly code. It's a nightmare.
