Incorrect. It was the publishers decision to release only Steam. In EGS Case Epic payed those publishers for exclusivity so they can't and won't release on a different launcher.

The Epic Games store does not work on Linux.
Steam works natively, lots of GOG Games (though no launcher) work natively. BattleNET, UPlay and Origin work through wine without trouble.

Physical was costly. GFWL was a travesty to deal with and Steam was just the best choice and the time. Hell Steam didn't even pay anyone to put there games on the service.
Epic is actively making shit bad for everyone involved. Yes they get an extra 15% of funds but nobody is using the service because it sucks. They are buying up Games to exclusively sell on their platform nobody wants to use. Actively ruining sales for the games they have.
Chances are they would make more money if they just didn't force exclusivity.

Origin is pretty cool, to be fair. I don't use it heavily because I don't play a lot of EA games, but their return policy is 30-days no-questions-asked. Just like that. And the software itself is pretty fluid and not hard to work with.
I'm not saying I'd want to use it exclusively. Just that they are probably the best of the 'alternatives' - mainly because of that killer refund policy.
