Ruthless makes the most sense for a Spectre. It's what the Spectres actually look for "Get the job done". The other mission profiles are impressive, but they say nothing about Shepard's willingness to do make uncomfortable choices or endure sacrifices for the sake of an objective.

No, not in ME1. Insane is not remotely fun in ME1 no matter what class. Soldier has really bland abilities in ME1. Infiltrator get the same immunity power but also gets useful tech abilities.

No, I'm giving you pretty solid advice. In ME1 you can't hack open containers or doors if you don't have tech powers, so either you need tech or you need a squaddie with tech. An Infiltrator will let you have great combat abilities while also having tech skills, which frees you up to pick whatever squadmates you feel suit you best.
Vanguard has no tech, but again they have great combat abilities for medium and close range, and their biotic abilities let them crowd control or totally overpower single enemies.
Vanguoard has pistols and shot-guns; the shotgun is powerful as hell at close and medium range and the pistol eventually becomes a pin-point accurate and powerful machine-gun good at any range (though you can't zoom with it). As I recall, Vanguard gets lift and throw, which can be used on enemies at any time to temporarily neutralize them.
Infiltrator has pistol and sniper rifles; meaning they can pick off enemies from INCREDIBLE distances (as in miles away, literally). They have even better defense powers than the vanguard (immunity makes them nigh invulnerable). Their tech powers are not as flashy as biotics, but they do disrupt enemy attacks and lock down enemy power spam.
Infiltrators and vanguards both get access to medium armor, which is very well balanced and offers excellent protection without nerfing powers very much at all.

I should also add that in ME1 both you AND enemies can be hit with biotic and tech powers even when you have shields remaining. Enemies WILL start to fuck you up with damping, lockdown, and overload. They WILL knock you to the floor with biotic attacks and spam you with them until a krogan runs and kills you with melee attacks (krogan enemies are VERY dangerous in ME1). So you want a techie nearby with damping/overloard to limit how much enemies can hit you with their abilities or buff themselves with abilities (enemies have all the same powers you do excepting ai hacking and they have more generalized biotic attacks).
Another reason not to play Soldier is that in ME1 the gunplay is very basic. There is no location-based damage, no heavy weapons, and both you and enemies can tank a lot of damage after the first few levels. ME1 is not nearly as cover-based as ME2 or ME3, both you and enemies can use powers that let you run around at will and take damage while you lay down firepower on targets.
So if you go vanguard then you have good defenses and damage output, and also have biotics on command at all times to neutralize problematic enemies when you need to (such as a charging krogan you can knock down with lift/throw).
As an infiltrator, you have good weapons and damage output, and also tech powers on command to open all the containers you need (for loot and quests) as well as to limit how much enemies can spam their powers. Meaning you can then select your two squadmates to cover whatever you need. As a vanguard you will want a techie with you at all times.

Assault Rifles and Immunity are the best skills in the game, so Soldier is the best class by default.
That said, I've done fresh Insanity runs on every single class with Squad Power Usage on active and the game really is a fucking joke if you know how it works. Max defensive skills, earn money, buy specter weapons, actually use cover, don't get melee'd.

A hero is pretty generic but a Spectre is what makes Mass Effect unique. They are not quite heroes in the conventional sense. Frankly in any other story they'd be the villain.
