Those of us who are in our late 20s and early 30s grew up on websites like Newgrounds before Youtube and Yea Forums existed. Almost half of the content was exactly what you are describing. Hundreds and hundreds of videos with the same "what if Mario was violent" joke for years and years. It was the "Hello World" or the 3d Teapot of the flash video universe.

Racist Mario was just a standard boring old joke, with a racy clickbait image that caused Youtube's algorithms to go crazy and make it constantly appear on literally everyone's "recommended" for months and months.

Basically, imagine if every single time you went on a website for the next year, you got an advertisement for a new movie and the add was just a pair of tits. Finally one day you just click the ad, just to see what it is, and it's yet another Judd Apatow stoner comedy generic in every way, with the tits only appearing for 2 seconds in a post-credits scene. You are annoyed, but realize not only did you waste your time, but the ad is still fucking there as "recommended movie for you!"
