I think fulldive will be possible in my lifetime but nothing of too much value will be made for it, unless we really perfect deep learning machines that can create games for us. The amount of programming and assets needed to create full dive would be too high for even a massive team to do.

I think the main challenge will be writing the engine. After that, designing and making the assets would be no harder than making stuff for Oblivion or Skyrim.

I admit I don't know a ridiculous amount about asset creation but imagine needing to create accurate smells and tactile feedback. We've got sound down at least. You'd also need flavors which would be incredibly hard but could at least be limited by what's in the game. Everything you add to the game goes from needing sight and sound to sight, sound, smell, taste, and most importantly touch. You could get away with all swords tasting the same because who tastes swords, but they need to feel different.
Maybe you could get around it with some clever short cuts but it would still be a ridiculous amount more work.

I don't know about fulldive since I've never watched SAO or probably ever will but I prefer the .hack idea of people just playing VR through goggles and a controller.

Yeah, that would be the hard part, but that would be done by the engine; when making the asset, you would simply be assigning values to that object for the engine to produce (sweet==5, sour==5, salty==1, etc). There will be a lot more work I admit, but I don't necessarily think it would be harder, just more time consuming to make the object since you have to enter more values to define the smells, taste, etc.

So like I said, the challenge will be writing a good engine, if it is a Bethesda-tier engine, we are all dead.
