The first game is fucking amazing, one of the best in the franchise. The 2nd game I personally like, but it has some severe issues like being really easy and having really boring party members outside of the main characters. The third game is Sophie 0.5.

No. It's incredibly shallow. Despite billing itself as a city-builder it isn't really one and has very linear progression. There's also virtually no gameplay and you send the alchemists out to passively get resources so you don't even get to fight.

Time limits or lack of themselves aren't the problem, the problem is that Atelier isn't designed for infinite time. Sophie for example has long periods of time where you can't progress through the game and have to do all sorts of dumb sidequests and padding to continue, while a regular Atelier game would force you to continue progressing even if you aren't ready.

Arland Trilogy: Rorona, Totori and Meruru.

all are interconnected in little ways, but no need to play every single game.

If you can only play one, play Meruru, it is the best modern Atelier game.

I don’t think it’s that bad. Time limits can be a good and bad thing. In the case of the Atelier series they’ve been done in a way that doesn’t strip the games of its comfiness. Having some without the feature is just a way to switch things up. Now, the Arland trilogy had time limits. Having the fourth installment without time limits will definitely piss off some fans but I don’t mind. I think it’ll be fun in its own way
