Depends on gameplay mechanics such as exclusive abilities and hitboxes. If they're identical, I'd go with story relevance, which one fits more in the given environment. If there's no importance to gender or sex in either case, I'd consider playing either depending on visual appeal and voice acting. Females usually win the visual appeal, especially when I can customize looks to fall into some fetish.
I'm not a roleplayer, I don't see the character as an extension of myself. It's a puppet I have control over.

Yeah, that's why I'm primarily sticking to manga. But I have a positive outlook on games like The Outer Worlds and VTMB2, since the devs said they'd have proper mod support. If the games will have proper mod support, then you will be able to edit out the bits you don't like and add your own stuff. But that's the most positive outcome I can think of, I.E. flexible moddability like in Bethesda games.

Depends on the game, genre, character creator base model, etc..

For instance The Division has presets you can't customize and all the female face presets were so fucking ugly and unappealing that I chose to play as the whitest looking male I could find instead.

Overall I play both male and female characters in games that allow customization so I can get the maximum experience. Some games I chose exclusively female for reasons like the male VA being fucking terrible to listen to (Mass Effect)
