Sales of fraudulent or stolen keys, as well as sales of copies that were bought with fraudulent cards have always been present and a danger when it comes to steam key trading off steam. This has nothing to do with Epic story or Steam: cases like these happen all the time to games that haven't made shitty switches between platforms - this and and the whole Epic Drama are literally pure coincidences.
And every time a developer discovers fraudulent or stolen steam keys, they ask Steam to deactivate them, and Steam obliges. Again: this is normal, if shitty part of the business.

The people caught in this should have listented to re REPEATED warnings about using off-steam key traders, because while some may be legit, a lot of them are frauds.

I paid $20 for Dark Souls when it originally launched, i got sent a picture of the key from slip inside the box. I paid $50 for GTAV when it launched on PC, the key site i brought it from actually managed to get a torrent from Rockstar themselves to match Steams ability to pre-load the game before the launch.
