I tend to favor archery and one handed blades, as well as sneak and some light magic (restoration, alteration, not much destruction). I usually pick either Dunmer or Redguard, although in one playthrough in Skyrim I chose a Nord and it turned out alright.

I never play these beast races. I don't like the non-human races generally. Dark elves and high elves are usually weird looking so I stick to Breton and Nord generally.

I never understood the appeal of the furries races (cat & lizard) but, hey, that's someone else's psych bill and not mine.
Beyond those two, it doesn't really matter much to me. I mod the game to the point where the races don't matter. If I want something, I'll just mod it in or find a mod that's close enough to what I want.
Seriously, all that this game needs is 3 races: Orc, Human & Elf.
