play 3 or 4 instead, I liked DC but it is divisive

the character fusions offered came at a time when DBZ was hitting its stride and the MC was half-dragon. These two traits pretty much carried the game's popularity, not that it was any good. MAYBE Crapcom goodwill too, hard to say.

Should I add this game to emulation backlog or no I keep hearing mixed things

It has its good points.

Its a good game. It can be a bit tough in the beginning though until you get a decent set of dragons and characters.

Eh? Game had good tunes, neat boss fight mechanic that activates when it appears to be at 0HP, random encounters are over quickly when you get boomerang, overworld can be moved through quickly...................

>Random battle!

I still can't believe they had the audacity to re-release 2 without fixing that jank as fuck translation.

Ignore OP, it's a decent game especially for its given time when made and you will appreciate tremendously the changes in future series ever since this one.

yeah but bleu though

Breath of Fire as a series didn't really get its identity until the second game which was marred by a shitty translation.

with emulator speed up it's very playable, would be tortuous without. it also has some really arcane shit like in order for a party memeber's overworld ability to function they have to be at the front of the party which took me fucking ages to work out

Did BoF 1 have any "side effects" from using the dragon forms too much or a specific dragon form?

ever seen that Yea Forums pic about paintings?

nope

Which was the earliest Breath of Fire to have like side effects or something to the dragon forms? I think one of them had a game over or something?

2 drained all your MP
3 had some side effects if you used the wrong genes
4, no idea.
Dragon Quarter (aka 5) was the one that sped up the game over time if you used it

we don't talk about anything BoF after 4 here

Ahhh you've given me the answer I needed and more. Thanks user!

now that I remember, there was one gene combo that made Ryu ultra powerful but I think it also made him uncontrollable.

So you had to use someone else to use a targeting skill every turn so Ryu would hit the foe

Breath of Fire 3 with the Kaiser Dragon form? You could make it controllable with the Infinity+Failure Genes and I think there was one other combination but your stats in the controllable form were generally lower.

I was thinking of the non Kaiser one

5>4>3>2>1
This is one of the very few series that I think improved with every new entry.

>5
>improvement

Kill yourself retard.
It's a fantastic game with a fantastic soundtrack.

The game oozes SOUL.

Ignore the cancerous OP.
BoF1 is a fantastic game and imo a much better game than it's successor BoF2.

Just make sure to stock up on Marbl3's(cheap useful repelling item that completely wards encounters for like 30 steps)

These games need remakes. 3 in particularly so this guy would actually be rendered more useful. He's so cool but he's just so... nothing in terms of gameplay.

1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2

>These games need remakes.
No they don't(except for maybe the second one which was a disaster balance-wise and the shaman system was useless)

Breath of Fire 1 has objectively the best soundtrack in the series and the best soundtrack in an RPG ever. Fight me!

4 > 2 = 3 > 1 (didn't play 5)

3 is overrated.

FOR FUCK'S SAKE UDON, REPRINT THE ARTBOOK ALREADY IT GOES FOR LIKE TWO HUNDRED BUCKS ON EBAY AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I remember it having a similar feeling to Dragon Quest, a very simple JRPG with that great feeling of ADVENTURE. I enjoyed it way more than 2, because that one felt like exploring the shitty tired trope of the evil church and turned dragons into summons rather than transformations.

Anyway, highlight of the series is the third game, and the fourth one is very charming as well. I also think the fifth one for the PS2 is absolutely amazing, but it can be a very unapproachable game.

>start trying to Use random items to find side effects
>find out the E.Key hits all enemies for a flat 30 damage
>Nina suddenly becomes a good damage dealer
Also
>Karn joins!
>remember seeing locked doors in an earlier area
>make the pain in the ass trip back with him
>pick up endgame boomerang and armor

>Rating 2 over 1
Lmaooooooooo you people are mentally ill

I agree but I have to point out the church wasn't evil in itself, it was that Deathevan and his evil minions that were using the Church as a weapon.
And technically the Church thing wasn't tired back in 1994.

The problem with 2 is the horrific game balancing, the extremely frequent encounters and almost no way to avoid them(Smoke item doesn't work nearly as well as Marbl3), there's too much filler in it etc.
Also soundtrack is more hit and miss, there's some particularly bad stuff at times(like the repetitive 5 second long Dungeon theme)

The story is actually good when there is story to be told and the last act has a lot of good story material but right when it gets hype as fuck the game ends. It's very disappointing.
The whole last act when shit goes down with the church should have been the midway point not the last part.

Breath of Fire 2 had so much potential but it fucked it up.

3 = 5 > 2 > 1 >>>> 4

4 is an unfinished piece of shit. About the only thing it has going for it art style which is wasted on all the brown bland environments and the Fou Lu segments.

>2 is an unfinished piece of shit.
You only like it because you're a furfag.

>The story is actually good when there is story to be told and the last act has a lot of good story material but right when it gets hype as fuck the game ends. It's very disappointing.

To be fair you could make a similar argument for 3, in that you get long stretches of nothing. Hell 3 is even worse because at least 2 fills out a lot of that space with character building.

Ironically, the first game probably has the best story even though the characters you play as are mostly silent which some people have a problem with.

4 is ruined just by them being lazy and using ugly 3D instead of sprites for the bosses.

I don't think they were being lazy, they were just experimenting with mixing sprites with 3D probably.

Don't remember it looking bad on a CRT but in modern tv's it looks like shit.

Garr was the motherfucking madnote. The first time you fight him in the Contest of Champions he has the most metal song in the game and is literally unbeatable. Then the sonofabitch joins your squad to help you rain down glorious hellfire on the motherfucking horse assholes who took away your family. Then he tries to kill you in Angel Tower because he thinks it's his mission as ordered by God but because you've become such a boss Dragon you spank his ass and he decides to help you kick God's ass. Plus every time he landed a critical in combat he'd make that awesome "WHOOOYAH!" cry.

Fou-Lu did absolutely nothing wrong
>wake up centuries after unifying a chaotic warring land to assume your agreed-upon role of God Emperor
>find out the humans have co-opted your mythology and re-written history
>they plan to betray and kill you so that you can't have what they promised
>lyinglittleshits.jpg
>fuck it, they can't do jack to an Endless anyway
>journey across the land, constantly being assaulted even though you've made it abundantly clear they can't kill you
>thesefuckinguysiswear.gif
>get taken in by a sweet country girl who becomes enamored with you
>lies to her asshole landlord to keep you safe even though she knows it's going to end badly for her
>well shit, maybe these humans aren't totally bad after all
>escape pursuit and continue to Chedo
>on the way be attacked by the humans' WMD powered by the tortured and murdered soul of the woman who loved you
>aretheyfuckingnuts.mad
>they've made the surrounding area completely uninhabitable and killed every living thing for miles around just on the off-chance that it might stop you
>survive the attack and arrive at the capital
>they don't stop and keep trying to kill you
>that is fucking it, these humans are getting genocided and subjugated to fuck
He was right and justified

Stop stalking me you baka!

Why don't you think the first game has an identity?

I & II are easily the best games in the series.

Yes it is.

That whole boss gimmick where they live for a couple of more turns after you get their health to zero gets real old.

BoF5 is kino and one of the best rogue-likes ever made. Anyone that says otherwise is a brainlet.

Attached: bof5.jpg (275x392, 35K)

Its too bad Capcom forgot these games existed.

Attached: ninasbof.jpg (1000x1371, 1.16M)

Fun game, shitty mechanics that require you play it at least twice

I think we've all been bamboozled by the OP. I think OP intentionally started the thread this way so we'd actually discuss video games.

>3 is overrated
>Rates 4 highest
Wow a contrarian, impressive. Almost everything good about 4 was done first in 3.

>motherfucking horse assholes

Does anyone else think that Balio and Sunder are some of the most creepy and menacing villains in JRPG history? They give me the willies for some reason.

Attached: bof5a.jpg (1000x1538, 2.09M)

Just fucking play it for yourself, holy shit.

>rogue-like
It's not a roguelike at all, you dummy.

It is a fun game though.

It's alright. It has more going on than other jrpgs, with the characters having different out of combat abilities that are needed to overcome certain obstacles,

They took my brothers away from me. I could never forgive them for that.

translation patch 2 >>>> 1

5 is a good game. people just wanted more "muh medieval" bof, now i wont argue that another game like 1-4 would have been sweet.
i noticed a lot of people who hate 5 never adapted to the combat system. the story was just as good as any of the other titles.

That is why you save your stat boosting items till the latter half of the game where you can dupe them.

>the story was just as good as any of the other titles.
Bof5's obviously has by far the best gameplay in the series, but the story is trash. The setting is poorly developed and just boils down to generic cyberpunk cliches (oppression of the underclass! genetic experiments!). The idea that nobody in a billion years would think to ascend to the surface, even though it's perfectly hospitable, is dumb.

The settings of earlier BoF games were more unique. Breath of Fire 3 for example has a post-apocalyptic setting where Myria deliberately keeps society stunted by preventing them from developing technology. In Breath of Fire 4 the world is in a transsitional state, deciding whether it wants to rely on the guidance of the gods or rely solely on human self-determinatorrs.

Both settings were a lot more developed than Dragon Quarter, which doesn't hold up under the slighest scrutiny. It really just relies on a set of cyberpunk cliches to do the heavy lifting.

Superior

>hating BoFII
absolutely irredeemable dogshit taste

Yeah, it's bad. That's why people tell you to play 3 and 4

The one thing Fou-Lou did wrong is his Final boss form. Seriously after the awesome Tyrant what a damn lame looking boss.

Friendly reminder Capcom will never release another BoF because zoomers will never understand and boomers will not remember
