The demo version will run on W10 flawlessly, and it's possible to play past the demo's ending by mixing the full game's files in, except it'll crash whenever it needs to play certain CG's or sounds. That means the .exe for the full game is the problem; it crashes instantly whenever it's launched.

The way that people fawn over it... It's literally baby's first introduction to the meta genre. The jumpscares are overdone, everything after the suicide is predictable: "something creepy is goimg to happen soon, repeat ad nauseum". The character literally have no depth. The plot is too short.

Fucking finally someone says it. Higurashi kept me laughing and om the edge of my seat the whole time. I played chapter one of umineko and liked it, but chapter two was actually terrible. The only interesting part was the red text, but the rest was just terribly written.
Too many people see Higurashi as the childish version of Umineko, when it actually has way better pacing and premise and characters and basically everything. The slice of life sections make you care for the characters and feel like you are actually in the in-group of Hinamizawa, which makes witnessing what the in-group does to outsiders all the more cognitively dissonant. But then I hear of people that skip the slice of life sections because they want to "get to the scary parts".

What you're describing is incorrect. Higurashi doesn't ease into light-hearted antics, it outright slams you with them for scene after scene at times. The unsettling backdrop is good, but "slowly unnerving the player" doesn't happen in 7 or 8 at all either, and only to a limited degree in 4 and 5. The pacing is actually pretty abysmal most of the time with how much slice of life it includes. You get people like who say it was important, and it was, but there was still too much of it.

Sorry, I haven't played 7, 8 yet so that part of my statement might be incorrect.
I think part of it might be that we are bith looking at the story from different perspectives. You seem irritated at the volume of the slice of life sequences, but I didn't mind them as much, because I consider them the main part of the story. Sure, the suspense and horror parts are interesting, but I really appreciated how Keichii and others would get nice and settled and comfortable before the weird things start to happen. I genuinely enjoyed the SOL scenes, but I could see how people who are all about discovering what's happening in the background would be more interested in moving things along, because the premise is genuinely interesting.
Can we talk about chapter two? The random action scenes? The random characters that appear? The fanfic-tier ending? What the hell were they thinking?

Every scene feels irrelevant, like the witch is just making it up and later it's going to be revealed that it was all smoke and mirrors and applaud the story for deceiving us in the details. Subahibi's first half was kino. It's a shame it never lives up to chapter 2. I thought My Creation was going to be a prelude to things finally going balls deep and crazier than before, but turns out that was the peak and it just fizzles out into a generic feels-good story. Chapter 2 alone is so good I would recommend everybody to play the game for that alone, though. Then it's probably best to just drop the game around Jabberwocky I.

Jabberwocky 2 is the second-best chapter, but I guess you couldn't enjoy that without reading the rest and then being disappointed by it.

Everyone always tells you why it's trash, so what are you confused about? The story hinges on a plot twist that is fucking retarded and comes out of nowhere and makes no sense in retrospect, and it blatantly contradicts the events of the side routes, and the foreshadowing prior to the twist of things like the MC's blackouts are then completely dropped and go unexplained after the twist is revealed.
It's extra shit when their previous game had a far more competent twist.

Episode 2 is where many people dropped Umineko, so the criticism is somewhat warranted. Episode 3 is a lot better, but the author as a whole doesn't do a good job of respecting the reader's time. I still think it's worth reading because it's a really neat story and the ideas and criticisms it brings up against the mystery genre are really cool and innovative.

There are several big problems with R11:

1) The intro is weak. It's an office lady being hit on by a 12 year old shota on an airplane using esoteric poetry. I actually like the shota later on, but it's not a good first impression.
2) It's an unfinished game. Diehard fans won't care, but it made me absolutely furious when I learned the cliffhanger was the real "ending". Very bad impression to end the game on.
3) Even if it ever did get finished, it would be very dumb. The game kept piling on plot twits and convoluted bullshit that anything afterwards was bound to be completely retarded. The writers didn't know when to stop, and everything else suffered as a consequence.

I agree with your 100% and I think there are more reasons to not like the game: it's long-winded, it's also (imo) terribly written. But, to be fair, this could be said of almost all japanese vns.

I/O is absolutely better UP UNTIL A CERTAIN POINT. But it is better is a "I really don't have a slighest clue at where the actual fuck this is going" sort of way. It also has some some seriously silly shit even in the good parts of it, that has to be simply persevered through.

It also has some fairly unconventional art direction (they basically hired through acquaintances some amateur hentai-doujinshi guy, who has never seriously done backgrounds - and he actually drew them some of them in a very interesting, aesthetically, way; although his style of drawing characters is plain weird), and really good music (ONOKEN). Root Double is a SERIOUS step back on both of these points, when compared to I/O, both art and music, while well done, are absolutely of cookie-cutter/trivial variety, in my opinion.

That having been said, I really liked Root Double's Route B's apex and resolution.

Same with me. I sat through so many boring VNs, but that part simply broke me, despite being dozens of hours into the thing. That's a real accomplishment and impressive at how bad it is. Can you imagine a game making you drop it 90% through?

Well, actually, if you finish route D in Root Double, and then you read through Xtend route, which is about the size of route D, except 2/3 of its scenes are repeats of D's flashbacks with minor variations except you can skip it, then the very last scene in Xtend route actually says out loud what the point of route D was, and it actually really does make sense (in a kind of REALLY AUTISTIC sort of way). The best part, at least, for me personally, is that this last scene gives you hope, that Nakazawa finally managed to "get" something, is done for good with it, and that another route D, or anything similar to it, will never, ever happen in any of his subsequent works ever again.

Or maybe that's wishful thinking on my part.

Moreover, the initial, not Xtend Edition, version of Root Double, had all the Xtend route AS THE SECOND PASS IN THE END OF ROUTE D.

And it lacked that very last ending scene from Xtend, that flat out explains why it is written that way. So there wasn't even a payoff to that, conceptually.

I guess I would recommend Cinderella Phenomenon for someone new to the genre since it is free and really good. Amnesia is very popular, but a certain boy can be creepy and the MC is bland. I would stay away from Steam Prison too, that is one of the worst otome I have read.
