Old games were all about that unsettling ambiance and item management, nu-games are all about pure fun gameplay and cool cinematic shit. Mix all of that with a bunch of good looking/charismatic characters and you got one of the coolest/versatile series in vidya history.

The RE series was special because it emphasized mood and atmosphere, making you feel like you were playing an 80's style Horror movie. 4 was the last good one that gave you that feeling. Everything since has been shit. I still haven't played REmake2 because it looks like trash. Mr. X constantly chasing you and bullet sponge zombies. No thanks!!!FACT!!!

I wouldn't say Resident Evil is even a "good" series. There are more bad games in it than good ones at this point, though it's up to personal opinion whether the extreme highs make up for the absolutely horrifying lows. Iconic, maybe, but not great by any means.
