Competitive Puyo dates back to the 90's in Japan with Tsu. It never really took off here until PPT happened because between PPT and MBM we only got two english releases in the early 00's, so it was damned to cult status. Puyo Puyo is pretty much the Lonesome George of it's genre because so many series just disappeared after like 2003 and I'm pretty sure Puyo Puyo only survives because it still has cashcow power in Japan.

I'd argue that the GBA one is at least somewhat worthy of a try simply because it has a more proper translation of the planned story, but I prefer the original regardless because I believe the GBA one explains far too much in detail and the story actually suffers because of it. Takes a great deal of the magic out of the story, especially when they say it's all from a satellite.

I feel the exact same user. Especially with how talkative Max is in the remakes, it made what I still feel was an impactful ending in the first game weaker in the remake. I always liked how they made it so you learned more about the characters backstories in the barracks instead of the usual stock phrases (minus whatever they did to Domingo). It's been years since I've last played though and apparently when the original game came out their backstories were listed in more depth in a guidebook or something so I'd like to see if the backstories in the remake actually match up with with those.

It did from what I remember, the GBA remake actually was the same story but just in much, much heavier detail, which is why it seems different. I still think it's for the better on the Genesis one though, I genuinely feel a lot more engaged with the original.

You know what's even more sobering? SEGA Japan pushed this idea of Sonic having a human girlfriend through anyway in Sonic 2006, and they got all the shit SoA warned them about fired right at them.

The Fever reboot was a reboot done right. All of the games before Fever (Save for Minna de Puyo Puyo) were made before Sega purchased the series from Compile. Sega rebooting the series with nothing from the Madouverse aside from Arle and Carbuncle as semi-cameos was this sort of respectful "we're going to leave what you've done with these characters and this world alone, here's what we're going to do" sort of deal.
