No, the only legitimate source is Mogstation itself. There is not a safe reseller, a price lower than Mogstation's is in and of itself a red flag.

The game was practically designed with solo play in mind. It's never too late to jump in but I'd wait for Shadowbringers to drop first so you can just buy that one and get all the DLC.

All items come from Mogstation because there is no other distributor, unless it's a code from something physical such as a minion from one of the artbooks or collector's editions. You buy it from the seller on ebay and they send you the code for you to activate on mogstation. Most of the sellers need you to have feedback though or they wont sell to you.

Honestly FFXIV is only good for its story, and that's less of a commendation of its writing- more regarding its' scale/scope. As I wrote above it's been going on nearly 10 years and nothing else with an episodic story can really boast the kind of long-term character development XIV has seen (books notwithstanding, I mean in terms of interactive entertainment). As a result it won the Guinness Record for longest credits sequence, because of how long the game has been going, and its showing no signs of stopping soon.

Which wouldn't affect leveling dungeons since there's no iLvl requirement on those

If you think about it, the Scions are use to having champions. We're technically not the first WoLs unless you're still playing our original 1.0 character and that's your head cannon. They're kind of use to someone cleaning up their messes.

Ishgard, on the other hand, has kept themselves isolated and didn't rely on anyone. They were never big on outsiders and Aymeric even mentions the possibility of you getting into Ishgard would be nearly impossible until you stopped Shiva and the dragon on the bridge. We're brought into Ishgard on the words of a friend. You freed them from their war and bettered their nation when you really didn't have to.

Kind of sucks that no one else seems to care. The Scions and other leaders of course know you're important and they'd be fucked without you, but they just brush it off as "oh you'll always be there" kind kf thing.
