Is there a "skill level" to actually start commissions. I mean I got a "decent following" with a few "do you take commissions" messages, but I still have the nagging feeling of "people won't want to pay for xyz"
Take my word with a grain of salt because I'm only speaking from personal hang-ups and am extremely drunk and angry about some shit I have in indefinite hiatus right now.
In my experience, an artist equipped to commission -- let's say doing lewds is a central point but not a singular point -- should have some competence if not growing study of the human figure. I kinda wanna punch some artists in the mouth who think that just because Liefeld or any Tumblr artist working on She-Ra or Steven Universe can get by without drawing decent legs, feet, hands or fingers (whichever applies) that they can throw caution to the wind and write that lack of ability off as a personal style. I mean look, whatever your endgame is, whether it's joining the industry or having a hobby while holding down a dayjob how well you draw and what you draw well is what cements you in your trade (even if you're drawing/doing commissions as a hobby, draughtsmanship is a trade whether you agree to it or fucking not).
The problem I have with amateur and intermediate artists on the internet is that they embrace the right to have shortcomings and limits and I think that's dangerous in any profession -- drawing or not. You ever hear the adage "The best ability is availability"? Well this applies to artists: "The best ability is flexibility." That doesn't mean "draw scat because it's it outside your comfort zone", the comfort zone card can be abused like that. However some things that are commonplace in public life and cinema, you should at least build yourself for that. Because most people will want things where hands aren't hidden behind hands or mechanical objects exist and frankly if you want to be someone who makes a visual novel or a serial webcomic, you need to be equipped for handling subjects you might suck at now or at least build the knowhow to analyze and deconstruct things. I hate seeing artists with potential hurt themselves.

I've been trying to get them to do it for awhile. A few of them seem to take advice to heart and have improved, but they are few and far between. Whats worse is that some of them stagnate.
