They were very similar but DaS sacrificed RPG mechanics for the sake of improved melee combat, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but if we couldn't have both in equal measure I'd rather have the former. The interconnected world was cool but IMO often lacked the atmosphere that DeS could create with its themed areas. Also DaS introduced covenants and their focus on PvP while also locking certain things behind covenant ranks which I guess was a step up from world tendency but I'd rather just have had everything available in the world. Also I didn't like the changes to the magic system and basically everything after O&S felt half baked. Overall I enjoyed DS1 but it's probably my least favorite Souls game.
