pre-jump animations creates a type of lag or feeling of unresponsiveness. The feeling of "building up for a jump" is already created by you moving you finger to press down the button to actuate it. Skidding isn't really the same kind of phenomenon. It happens after the action of turning after running and is more or a punishment if you reckless run around. I'm not sure what a pre-jump lag serves, other than punishing you for not being precognizant.

It's possible enough to simulate it, the developer is just lazy and chooses to tilt the sprite instead of making a new sprite as part of the animation that is tilted
