I was actually hoping DS4 would be vita's d-pad as-is, what a disappointment that was
it's still my favorite d-pad overall, and I've used a wide-range of controllers dating all the way back to the nes. I do hate every other buttons on the vita though.

I was talking about original myself, those buttons also killed my thumb when playing wipeout because holding a button for a long time would dig into my thumb. start/select were very hard to press, and R/L are so bad

I've only used the original. The face buttons had a satisfying click that you don't get on PS consoles. They are just too small.
