MercurySteam is likely working on Metroid 5 since Samus Returns met expectations and the team was happy with it.
I'm not even sure it's directly responsible for the series' 5 year hiatus at this point. It coincided with the launch of the Wii U, which didn't get a lot of B-List Nintendo franchises because of its troubled life and low sales. They might have just sat on the franchise for a bit while they searched for studios to take the reigns for both 2D and Prime, since Retro was busy and R&D1 doesn't exist anymore.
It's about time people stop crying about a one-off game that's 9 years old now and has had minimal impact in following games in the series.
