Basic Strategy RPG.
The gimmick in most titles was the 'formations', aka give command for the units to move faster, do more attack or do better defense (raising not just relevant stats, but making certain commands cheaper, more expensive or not available at all). So you played a game of resource management.

But the game is easy enough that you could beat anything in the standard formation and just using heal commands to keep people alive.
Doing better in combat raises affection though, so there is that

So gameplay is day to day events/convos with the harem, and then finally SRPG combat with mechas.

I do not remember them having direct confrontations about that in I or IV. Maybe 2, but still not sure. Only time any of the girls seriously hears another about how she loves Ohgami and confronts him is in IV, between the chosen girls from the Tokyo and Paris troupe (aka, girls from 2 and 3).

No harem in my playthrough, everyone except for the redhead aren't going in my party and I'm only using my free VN segments with her.

To be fair, most JRPGs, have a very basic 'hit a couple flags, do a couple events' romance aspect. Like Riviera, where you run a harem party, but it's all just dialogue while you run a dungeon.
Half of the game and many mechanics just for interacting with girls is a focus not many games have.

There is no harem ending in any entry, you either choose one or you don't.
Non porn games with actual HAREM ending are quite rare.
On top of my head, only recent JRPG with one was conception 2.

The big issue with those kinds of 3d anime aesthetics is that they're done by low budget devs without the time nor money to make it work. It's like how CG in anime can look so bad because they keep the frame rate similar to the low frame rates of 2D anime.

I'd take sakura wars 1 over 5's, 5 wasn't any more tactical but it felt like 100x more of a slog

Langrisser didn't have dating sim elements until langrisser 3, which came out 3 weeks after sakura taisen 1.

I've only played through SLML, but in that one I don't remember having the choice to put characters on the bench, you have to work with what the game gives you. Also, I tried romancing Anri, but the game told me to fuck off and made me pick one of the 6 girls, so I don't think there's going to be a harem option.

It's not that the devs can't, it's more like they don't want to fully commit to anime aesthetic. They don't go all out, only half way through. Games like Code Vein, One Piece World seeker, Tales of, and all of those that have anime characters but everything else like props, environments and Illumination are more realistically rendered, making for a weird blend that doesn't look good most of the time. The absolute champion of this is Jump Force.

Only a few devs fully commit to the anime art style, they're ArcSys, CC2, and that studio that is making the Kill la Kill game, their games look fantastic and translate the 2D art to 3D masterfully.

Sakura Taisen was one of the very first ones and to me is very elaborated in that department unlike most harem SRPG.

1-4 are available on PC, but only in japanese.
You could emulate them in PS2 to use speed up features, save states etc.

5 is the only one localized and it is available on PS2-Wii, easy to emulate if your pc was made after 2010. PS2 has the japanese dub, Wii is only english dub.

There aren't harems routes in Sakura taisen, Its not like Persona. Once you choose a girl you are stick with her until her own ending, so it require save and load to see every individual event. You do side events and dates until she become your main girl then start seeing a lot of new scenes in the main story.

Now if only the body animation could match it.

objectively the design is pleasing but she is not sakura. sakura should have a distinct yamato nadeshiko impression which the new design (while lovely) is quite obviously lacking. kubo should have tried harder to use fujishima's design as a base rather than reinvent the character.

The company behind the games "Red Company" is pretty anal about them (they wont even allow remasters)

The game is titled New Sakura Wars instead of Sakura Wars 6, as while it takes place after Sakura Wars 5, Sakura Wars 5 first released in 2005, two generations of consoles ago. The game feels more like a reboot, and has new core staff too, with Bleach‘s Kubo Tite as the main character designer for example, hence why the “New/Shin” in the title.

Kubo Tite was picked as the main character designer as the staff thought he was the best choice to depict Sakura Wars‘ Japanese styled clothes and katanas. Kubo Tite was really eager to work on the series and meticulously designed the characters’ weapons. He actively participates in the development and proposes many ideas for the game as well.

The world depicted in New Sakura Wars isn’t very different than the one shown in the previous games, even if 12 years passed since Sakura Wars 5’s story. No new technological breakthroughs happened during that timeframe and it’s still a Steampunk world. The only big thing that changed is how the world is much more aware of the Theatre Troupes, with many more Theatre Troupes existing in many cities of the world.

5 is the least in a single entry, though there may be a hidden or NG+ option like in V

The steam market place is pretty much entrance to south american, african, and slavic countries all in one single place

Ease of porting it to PS4 and Xbone allows for ease and cost efficient porting for access to north american and european markets

Localization companies are also much cheaper. Even games like Trails series are now doable while still seeing a profit.

So pretty much any series can be revived. Accessibility/profitability or viability is not really much of a question anymore, it's really whether they want to do it or not and whether they have good ideas to back it up

Which is why I think the nip industry will have a huge rise for the next years.

All of the main girls who have specific routes for them are the ones shown up-front and are on the cover of the box art, at least in the first four. Never got around to finishing V. That said, you don't start with the whole roster from the beginning of the game, you start with just some of them and then gain additional members as the story progresses, but they're still the ones up-front that you've at least seen pictures of already.

They said one of the reasons it wasn't localized was because of the hard subs on the screen, yet there's someone out there trying to translate it and it was looking pretty decent.
