I have nothing against the setting. Mongols are underused in fiction, they were some of the most hardcore badasses ever. I say this as someone not liking the gameplay so far though, I think it looks less good than Nioh and Sekiro.

It's likely Ghost started production before Sekiro. But FS don't bother with AAA shit so they pump out their games with years less in dev time. And in much higher quality.

That's wrong. Devs said that Nioh gave them a lot of confidence so for Nioh 2 they feel like they can make the gameplay closer to how the original vision was instead of doing a souls-type thing.
Gameplay is a literal afterthought for western devs. They think of a cool setting/story first and then try to find some simplistic gameplay that will fit that aesthetic. There's an article that gets posted around here occasionally where Japanese game devs were working with some western ones and were baffled that in their game design documents they went on and on about the setting and the characters and only got around to describing what the GAME was supposed to be like in a short blurb at the end of the document.

I think it was either Kojima or Itsuno saying it. Japs go crazy describing gameplay and build their games around that. Western devs want to tell a story and then they shoehorn in gameplay in there aswell a la Uncharted.

i think the most recent game that I played that mixed gameplay and storytelling really well was Persona 5. people like to hate on that game on Yea Forums because it's popular and well received, but I think it meshed the two together so well. every mechanic made sense in the setting of the game and fit together perfectly
it's easily one of my favorite JRPGs because of that fact and its excellent presentation
