Now that that clickbait title got your attention, I wanted to make this thread because I've finally started playing LISA the Painful after seeing it constantly praised on Yea Forums. And unfortunately, it just isn't a good game.
The problem with Lisa is the same problem that every single one of these Earthbound-inspired indie rpgs suffers from, and indeed, Earthbound itself. They want to be these deep, introspective, character-driven narrative experiences, but they attempt to do that by using completely generic RPG mechanics designed around high-fantasy dungeon crawling (and no, replacing "MP" with "PP" or "SP" doesn't make them any less generic). My eyes just glaze over when I see the complete disconnect between story and gameplay.
I can't stress enough how mindnumbingly boring the experience of playing Lisa is. The environments look like Mario worlds, except with less detail than even the NES version of Super Mario Bros. They are so sterile and boring to look at. The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash. The combat might just take the prize for the most boring menu-driven battle system I've ever played. I don't even think I've ever fought a battle that involved more than a single enemy. Even on Painful mode, the encounters are a complete cake walk and all you have to do is mindlessly button mash the main's characters silly combo move. The writing commits the sin of being obnoxiously heavy-handed, with constant sappy flashbacks and montages, while being almost completely devoid of any actual characterization or any sort of compelling story hook.
I've only played it for a few hours, and I really wanted to give this game a chance, but it's such a chore that I can't image how people can stomach 10+ hours (or however long it takes to complete) of this crap.
Nobody cares about your worthless dogshit opinion. Lisa is a masterpiece, you are irrelevant.

Perhaps, I didn't beat it either but got about three quarters of the way through. What kept me going was some of the characters were pretty neat, some of the soundtrack was pretty neat, and also I happened to only own a toaster at the time and this game is easy back oven friendly. The encounters being easy was strange now that you mention it. Lisa was an rpg where I would just faceroll everything for an hour then come upon some boss that could instakill anyone which was the only place any difficulty came from for me. At least until I figured out you're just supposed to use Harvey Alabastar's slander or Fly Minetties puke to make bosses your bitch.
I liked parts of it. I didn't like how often I would accidently run off cliffs but that could very well have been my own fault. Good read OP.
Asher Collins
I understand your point, but most of what is you say is only your taste. I think the music, even if it isn't amazing, did a really good job making the game weird.
The gameplay try to connect lore with it. Loosing a party member could be forever, drugs make some character a pain to use, the choice impact the gameplay, etc.
The art style is pretty milimalistic and yes, probably too much, but to me, this is what make the game amazing. Weird et violent thing with pixel art.
The writing is maybe the real flaw. I liked it for what it is, but sometime, it's just total mess, especially with Joyful.
I feel like undertale is really more boring. At least, you have 31 characters to play, and the game is short, so you shouldn't be bored soon.
But yes, RPG is RPG and it's just not your type of game probably. I don't like them so much, but this one is pretty unique to me.
Thomas Baker
clearly we playing different games because this was the funniest game I have ever played and there were gags every screen
Oliver Morgan
i havent played the game yet but the music is fucking awesome, dude.

Shut the fuck up and die faggot

>game is called Lisa the painful >is painful to actually play through Nice.
>The environments look like Mario worlds, except with less detail than even the NES version of Super Mario Bros. They are so sterile and boring to look at It's a post apocalyptic world of course there isn't going to be a lot of buildings >The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash Fuck no the music and the story are amazing you just got shit taste friend, not every RPGs has to have medieval or church type battle music >The combat might just take the prize for the most boring menu-driven battle system I've ever played Gotta agree on this >I don't even think I've ever fought a battle that involved more than a single enemy. Why the fuck are you making such a long review if you haven't even played the game for 30 minutes >Even on Painful mode, the encounters are a complete cake walk and all you have to do is mindlessly button mash the main's characters silly combo move. You're at the beginning of the game dumbass >The writing commits the sin of being obnoxiously heavy-handed, with constant sappy flashbacks and montages, while being almost completely devoid of any actual characterization or any sort of compelling story hook. There's more characterization than plot and off course you haven't seen any story hooks yet you've played for only 30 minutes
You don't deserve that game
Nicholas Phillips
>It's a post apocalyptic world of course there isn't going to be a lot of buildings Uh-huh.
Necropolis. You posted a picture of Necropolis, the remnants of Bakersfield I think. Of course there would be fucking buildings. Olathe is based off some shitty middle-American town. Don't be dumb.
Aaron Cruz
Mind you Painful had to balance the encounters so any combination could beat them It's a different tune on Joyful and the Pointless fangame as you got less party members and more resource management
Eli Ortiz
I hope you pirated it and didn't threw your money on a SJW
Highly disagree. That said I dropped LISA The Joyful about 30 minutes in. Buddy sucks.
Caleb Brooks
Great, now that you've aired this out, go ahead and make a shitty youtube video with your pleb opinions ao all the zoomers have more talking points to regurgitate about games they've never played.
Liam Lopez
>The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash I was going to respect your opinion, despite the fact that I love the game. I was willing to give your pointless rant a chance, but you didn't even play the game did you? "Faux-retro chiptune trash" doesn't at ALL describe the soundtrack regardless of what you think of it.
Grayson Thompson
>Yea Forums praising average to downright awful games in a blatant attempt to appear hip and edgy
Wow, I'm shocked.
Henry Campbell
You lost me when you said the music is chiptune, you don't know what you're talking about, opinion dis fucking carded
Isaac Parker
its a terrible game
i bought it because i like a lot of elements of the design, but i stopped playing it after like 2 hours because it's horrible to play. still satisfied with purchase due to the music.
you're right, even if you're going to trigger a lot of Yea Forums shitters. Developers should aim at a more consubstantial approach between gameplay and story, not using the old rpg maker meme design.
That's a problem with videogame as a whole thought, can't shake the cognitive dissonance when you're playing against fucking bosses in a horror game, for instance.
Benjamin Robinson
You're not special for having shit taste, go hang you little zoomer.
Aiden Miller
LISA is a good RPG Maker game. It is obviously made in VX Ace. Anyone who's used any RPG Maker engine knows that. I'm a fan of RPG Maker, and so I liked it. As far as games made in that engine go, it's one of the best along with games like OFF and Legion Saga. Otherwise, it's just an okay game with a good story.
Benjamin Smith
>Even on Painful mode, the encounters are a complete cake walk and all you have to do is mindlessly button mash the main's characters silly combo move. Lisa has it's faults, but this is some retarded shit
>Legion Saga. my nigger, i recently got to know the fucker is remaking it as a commercial game, but it looks even worse than the original, why does nobody using rpg maker put real effort on their games?
*pretentious Because you couldn't understand it doesn't make it pretentious, it just makes you look like a retard
Mason King
NICE. Yeah, Legion Saga 2 and 3 were amazing games. I found them trawling the internet for RM2K resources as a kid. They actually got me into Suikoden and making my own games. I remember spending entire days as a kid dissecting those games in RM2K to understand how he made the party switching rooms and Suikoden battles. It really did have a lot of interesting mechanics added, despite barely using any original assets for graphics or music. I'm surprised anyone here recognized it, because they were never really that popular, even with people who like RPG Maker. You're right though, it's rare anyone releases an RPG Maker game that is truly a labor of love these days. I'd say LISA qualifies, though.
Maybe, but it was still a really well made RPG Maker game and it deserves what little recognition it gets.
> [LISA and other "Earthbound"-like titles] want to be these deep, introspective, character-driven narrative experiences Not really, but I understand what you are trying to get at. They really don't TRY to be these things. Aspects of their lore and narrative come off as deep, but I guarantee you that was not the writers' intentions in either game. Which is probably why their narratives are so fucking good.
> Launches into some screed about mechanics and graphics. Fine, you don't like the gameplay or aesthetics. That has nothing to do with the story.
There are many games which have stories I absolutely hate but have gameplay mechanics I adore and visa versa.
Is it goes when you have some (((ludonarative))) harmony? Sure. But the absent of one aspect doesn't negate the other.
It's a game. Don't be angry at games. It makes you seem like a sanctimonious twit.
>gets triggered over that >thinks they have the right to whip out onions
Nolan Lewis
cool >it's rare anyone releases an RPG Maker game that is truly a labor of love these days honestly, that's why i moved from rpg maker to ue4 over the years, couldn't accomplish my vision on a 2d engine
>"u triggered :)" >onions I fucking hate Yea Forums
Evan Nguyen
Good. Go back.
Carter Diaz
No
Carter Stewart
The thing is, I understood it and it just felt too basic for me I guess. I expected it to be more did than it was, is my point
Parker Rivera
Good for you, user. I cannot into UE4.
Parker Hughes
I am actually planning on making a game on MV I am still thinking about the combat system, I want it to be unique and more like a puzzle than normal rpg combat systems
Evan Miller
What was so basic about it that you didn't like?
Josiah Barnes
As I said, I just expected more. The moment that kid was showed, I knew it was going to be "something has happened to the child that made him dream all this or create a new world". I was fine with that, because I thought that there was going to be more to it, but that was all
Jacob Cooper
*shown, I can't spell for shit while high
David Ross
There are plenty of plugins for that, ranging from SRPG combat to fucking carbon copies of Undertale's. Plugins are easy to edit to your liking, as well. MV has the easiest learning curve, imo. Good luck, user.
I am talkinh morw about the enemy design and how to defeat them using the basic FF battle system that MV gives you. Shit like skills you can use and how you have to use it to defeat them.
Lucas Powell
>The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash What the fuck did you played? I can only think of one track with that description, but i doubt you even bother playing to that part
what the hell do you want from us? to design your game?
Mason Davis
>"I know, I'll be contrarian towards Yea Forums like they were with my favourite game with entire paragraphs of my absolute dogshit opinions!" Which one of us hurt you so bad, user.
Sounds more like a taste thing. I really don't understand how anyone could say this game is pretentious? The story doesn't really have any sort of "deep" meaning to it. Its more character driven.
Zachary Powell
>The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash. Opinion discarded.
Carter Williams
>The music is forgettable, faux-retro chiptune trash Are you sure you played Lisa and not Undertale?

I don't enjoy Earthbound but I loved this game. It may be just your hatred for Earthbound, OP.
