It's a stupid joke. Back before every other player used a walkthrough, seeing it in various places was amusing because illusory walls could be anywhere and voting them up just made it seem more believable. The best ones aren't put directly in front of a wall, but rather anywhere surrounded by walls.

Yeah one time I came across two in that tree you can reach from the Blighttown swamp, but the wall didn’t break.
