Honestly I kinda get this, while I do love his wacky woohoo pizzaman personality from 345 I kinda miss when he took things seriously and was the kinda guy who'd say absolutely dumb shit with the sincerest conviction. In 3 Dante had a few moments like that, 4 had a couple but he was a bit dismissive during them, 5 should've been full of them but that just wasn't the case, everything was treated in a laidback, "pfft yeah" manner which I feel undermined the gravity of the plot a bit and led to some of the inconsistencies in tone and pacing.

If you can stomach the shitfest that is the first episode, the rest of the series is pretty alright with some good moments, just its absolute biggest shortcoming, bigger than the underwhelming fight scenes, is how it keeps bringing up really cool ideas that you expect would be expanded upon but never are.

That's probably the whole reason why Itsuno created Nero in the first place, Itsuno never really knew how to write Dante properly and never thought of him as his character. Nero is Itsuno's own character that tries to prove himself as someone on the same level as Dante, as if Itsuno's trying to prove something to Kamiya.

For sure. Seeing some of 1 Dante's fire and soul getting into things would've improved things greatly. That entire situation was the perfect opportunity for him to do but I don't know if it's Reuben's delivery or just how it was set-up, but moments like "The thing is, she went looking for you too," or "he's your father," and even "that last shred of humanity you had, you just lost it" didn't ring true.

Perhaps both could be true for each other, I can see how/why he should've taken 4 more seriously with the sudden realisation he has family again, but then again he does take things seriously in the ending, and seems to just be on a high the whole game.

Anyway yeah, Itsuno Dante has a more nuanced personality than GUTS N HONOUR which is probably why I'm a bit more disappointed that his deeper personality isn't explored as well as it was in 3

But Nero's power autism is just there to set up the pottery contrast with Vergil's. Vergil lost what he wanted to protect and let his quest for power be the end goal itself so it consumed him. Nero still had something to protect and succeeded, twice.

If a writer messes up with that it's going to be bad as it'd be a retcon of the core of Nero's character just because of some stupid meme moment at the end of bloody palace.

In some senses, but the way that Reuben plays him is pretty one-note. So instead of seeming invested and serious, he just seems like he's smirking at the crowd and ready to do a 900 flip. It's to where, on paper, he's somewhat close to DMC1 Dante, but in actuality it's just 4 Dante with a bit less of a high. I can't help but imagine how much nicer things would've been for the plot if Dante was vulnerable at all, and just had heart and soul to show his estranged brother in that gruff voice of DMC1 which was, cheesy or not, always full of conviction.

But that was the whole point of this game. He already learned to channel that into something positive. Since before the game, even, when he tamed his anger by exposing himself to the annoying kids from the orphanage, which mellowed him out and it's the reason why he's good at taking Nico's banter. Nero's anger issues is literally the central theme of DMC5.

Honestly just a couple posts after yours someone else pretty much summed it up for me.

As said, his characterisation isn't adequately like y'know, filled with conviction and seriousness when he should be, nor does he undertake any major development aside from getting Vergil back. In a way he's more like 1 Dante in the way that they both drove the plot but were barely affected by it, at least within the span of the game. We see the impact 1 has on him in the anime and 2 but whatever, outside of the scope I'm talking right now. In 5 his long lost brother, the reason he's cripplingly depressed and the world is getting fucked up by a giant demon tree, returns. Does Dante really change cause of it? He has no development, he kinda just sighs and goes "not this shit again". Nothing changes for him, nothing is explored, because he doesn't let it change him, he acts like Vergil returning and fucking shit up is just another day in the life of Vergil, not like "holy shit my brother who I've expressed heaps of care for has returned from the dead a second time, this is my chance to save him" or anything remotely like that. The lack of him treating anything seriously or acting like there's anything at stake is the reason why he doesn't develop or get explored, again it's because he just doesn't let it happen.

He literally did, and if you introduce a new one it won't be a "lifelong" one.

Without killing Kyrie, how do you even advance Nero's plot? He's already crossed the lived happily ever after finishing line. Capcom has enough experience to know it's a terrible idea to mess up with a character that has already reached that point (see: phoenix wright).

That's purely arbitrary. Canon already allows him to have both an unlimited variety of weapons thanks to magic arm shenanigans and any weapon they don't just decide to throw at Dante.

For the entire game he's brushing people off and rushing headfirst into the situation all because Vergil is involved. In both 5 and Before the Nightmare, his one track mind when it comes to Vergil is a key part of his characterisation.
That's why Nero's intervention scene isn't just for Vergil.
Dante is genuinely in the wrong for most of DMC5 because if aforementioned Vergil autism and THAT is the part of him that is explored in the story

This. Adding to that a bit, I get why Dante would go "I'll have to kill him again." It's a retread from 3. But he also had some regrets, and they fucked him up. He dispatches of Nelo in 1 but there's a bit of a canonicity issue between 1 and 3 and, long made short, Dante didn't know until it was done. He should have had some actual response to Vergil beyond vitriol. He tries to talk to Urizen but it has no organic lead-in or build up. It was just, "All right so we're gonna fight but man did I ever tell ya that mom tried saving you too? I didn't tell you this in the previous times we met but now it's important because of PLOT." Yet despite reasoning that he has to kill Vergil, he doesn't stick with it either. He's all over the place. The plot has great undertones but is very messy in practice.

Sure, but in terms of sheer sadness factor I reckon Pain has it beat. I'll Be Your Home is a sorta medium but extended sad, Pain is like a strong concentrated one, if that makes any sense at all

It is explored, just not in big exposition dumps. His entire attitude and manner throughout the entire game is the exploration of this from an external view.
V's spiel to Nero after mission 17 is also probably the most direct moment of it

Sure, sure, then I guess I'm wrong in saying that he doesn't have any issues explored, but I don't think I'm wrong when I talk about the execution. If people had pulled him up on being so narrow-minded throughout the story it could've drawn more attention to "Hey Dante's actually kinda fucked up and trying to kill his brother with no real reason, we need to reel him in", which would then make Nero's intervention work even better. It was already my favourite part of the game but all these themes and undercurrents came to a head in a way that felt kinda rushed, like Nero suddenly gets over his anger at Vergil cause Kyrie says she trusts him, Nero tells Dante to fuck off, don't be a dipshit and don't kill your brother, and Dante just kinda goes "meh alright, guess I'll go nap then"

I think you could build future stories out of Nero or Dante simply by having them help people. Nero is more obviously suited to this, but it's not like they don't both run a business specifically to solve demon problems. It's not mandatory that every story involving saving the day has the protagonist go through a life-changing event; in many cases their basic personality drives them all the way through.

What you're suggesting is roughly what the anime tried to do, and to be honest I think it could work well if executed upon better than in the anime. A lot of the time Dante hears/experiences some deep shit but then says nothing and fucks off home to get drunk, but it's Dante in particular who's become the series mentor who's supposed to guide everyone else, it's the role he took in 2 and 4, and should've taken in 5

A lot of it could have been spread out and dumped more clearly, but DMC isn't really the place for that. It's never been the kind of series to do expositions on characters' feelings and inner thoughts, that role is more relegated to the novels.
As for Nero, it doesn't really feel to me that he got over his anger at Vergil, rather that knows that it isn't the time for that as the Quliphoth is still fucking shit up. He still tries to get Vergil and Dante to stay in which they probably would have hashed things out after cutting down the Tree, but the game ends there.

So all in all, I do agree that it has the potential to be fleshed out a lot more. But I also feel like there's a lot more depth in what IS there than some people give it credit for.

The last leg of the game is kind of a mess honestly. The familiars forcing Dante to slay 'em so that Vergil can be freed of his turmoil was nice. Not once does Dante refer to Griffon as featherface and it triggers my autism a little bit. But it gave me hope, because that was a nice narrative bit. Then the brothers fight and it was just something out of DBZ narratively. 3's final climax got the gravitas it deserved and it was a significant moment for both twins. Here it just felt like a by the numbers sort of, "Well, this is the end of the game so...let's just do this." Also, it's kind of weird how everyone else is like "You can't kill your father, man!" It's one thing coming from Dante because he knows what he's going to do. But Trish hadn't been in any action since getting dunked on by Urizen. Lady had some say in it and, in a nice moment, it was fine because we know what she went through and that much was done well. But shit. Dante wants to kill Vergil for this whole Qliphoth incident, and because Vergil's "let go" of the last of his humanity. Then Nero slaps him and suddenly he's all "oh, well, whatever I guess I'm over it." No conviction. It's one thing to be swayed by Nero's speech, but he didn't contemplate or resist or anything. He just gets slapped and changes his mind.

For me the danger in stories that aren't about the personal development of the leads is the Japanese love of surprise melodrama. If they can avoid that, any kind of plot should be fine as long as the characters can act like themselves. They're entertaining as is. Having the characters interact more would be an improvement too; people keep coming up with little stories set outside the games because they want more of them.

The point that's been discussed here is that Dante is pretty fucking whimsical nowadays. He deals with everything with a shrug. He's going through the motions with no real drive or agency and anytime he shows some he lets go. In this case it's because he trusts Nero's judgement, but these things could have all been done better. Reading through the lines is fine and frankly necessary, but you have to admit that a lot of the issues people have with the plot of 5 is because it plainly wasn't done as well as it could have been.

Yeah, I agree user, apart from the bit where you said DMC isn't the place for it. 3 had a damn near perfect story with clear motivations, arcs and all that, so I can't help but hold everything up against it. But otherwise yeah you're pretty much all correct my dude.

Again you've got it right on the head user, Dante didn't even treat the death of the familiars with enough gravitas which was sincerely disappointing, sure he was a bit sad but I feel the execution really could've been better than "Rest in peace, little chicken". Perhaps it would've even benefitted from him just staying silent and for once not cracking a joke, just like after Vergil 3 and Nelo 3? But yeah, from that point on everything seemed pretty stilted and by the numbers, like "well shit Nero's turmoil isn't resolved so we need to fix that, we need to have a cool Dante and Vergil fight, and we need to give Nero a cool final fight with some emotional weight" but everything just blows itself off as not serious, even just Dante and Vergil getting up after the final boss and kinda fucking off like nothing happened. Like cmon man, please. Dante telling Nero that "because of you we can go, capische?" was alright but it felt like they put it in just because it was otherwise too barren.

To be honest, the melodrama is ok, just needs to be fleshed out. But yeah holy shit what fleshing out we got of the characters and their relationships was really entertaining, I got happy every time Lady swung by the diner to join Dante for a meal and call him a dumbarse. As you said, they're fun characters on their own, and even more fun when they interact with each other and we see their dynamics too.

It's possible to have emotional beats in a silly adventure. With Dante they might have gone a bit too far in the other direction this time around since it's often not clear what he thinks about what's going on, but I'd say not reacting to the gravity of a situation is a series staple now.

I think that's right. It's not mandatory for the character that he always acts kind of indifferent, and it also wouldn't be weird if he appeared to take things more personally now. There's room for the characters to behave in entertaining ways even if their main personal issues have been sorted out. The same is true of the other two. I think I'd like to see them in a situation where they could do things differently now that they have different perspectives.

It doesn't make Dante much happier though. If anything he's the one who comes off as more depressed because he doesn't seem to care about anything to the point of doing nothing but sleeping in an office with no water or electricity.

I think that if anything, they both resent each other for the opposite reasons. Dante hates how motivated Vergil is to improve himself, while Vergil resents that Dante can let go of the past so easily.
