No, it's the same continuity as the previous games, but alternate to our timeline. So they got attacked by demons and developed steam mechs and presumably didn't get bogged down in WW2.

Hell, 2's villain was written as part of the militarist Army faction pushing for an invasion of China, in contrast to the extremely whitewashed but still relatively peaceful Navy in which Ohgami held a commission. (Mercing him then, and the 太正天皇 apparently not being as extremely sickly as 大正天皇 was in real life, is probably going to keep Taisho democracy rolling and Japan out of major wars, leading to it as neutral or a junior member of the Allies like in WW1, though. It's a waifu game, and that's an extremely easy way to not have to bring the mood down haring off into 'are we the baddies' moments.)

Not particularly deep, the squads are small, the difficulty is tuned to keep people who just want best girl to stomp playing, and unit stats are prebaked apart from morale bonuses gained from making the pilots happy in the ADV segments, but you do move your robots around a grid (or x radius on a map like Warhammer in later games) and issue commands like in SRW.

It kind of depends on the mission. But in general, they are. The first ones played more like Fire Emblem, by selecting and moving on squares and the later are more like Valkyria Chronicles.

5 is self-contained but doesn't really have the magic. 2 is a direct sequel to 1 and means powering through either a bad Dreamcast rip with missing videos or a relatively clunky Saturn game as your first go. 4 is a direct sequel to 2 AND 3, and leans very hard on being for established fans.

1 remake (PS2) adds a few scenes/events, IIRC. I'm a Kohran fan and thought they made her a little too goofy, but I also have a high tolerance for old game clunk and enjoy excuses to haul out my Saturn.

I believe the rest only have the one version with straight ports, and you can pretty much pick whatever based on what it's most convenient to emulate/force to work on modern Windows other than the DC rip issues. Unless you read traditional Chinese and not Japanese, then PC's definitely your platform.

Sakura Wars is unironically a very good study tool, if you're a socially-awkward NEET. The dialog isn't kiddy but it is (at least was) uncomplex to fit well into text boxes and reduce loadtimes, there's a lot of day-to-day life at the theatre mixed in with robot battles against thousand-year-old samurai ghosts, and most importantly the girls will think you're a weirdo if they ask you a question and you just stand there like a moron, so you're going to prioritize comprehension speed to not piss off your waifu the way that a normie would to not piss off the girl he was trying to pick up.

I was at that stage in my life once, with a couple semesters of college Japanese taken to slowly pick through muh mangos, and a combo of Sakura Wars and late-night FFXI parties dragged me over the hump to this being my eighth year as a lead translator.

If you talk about english teacher in Japan it depends on where you apply to work. The further away from the bigger cities you get, the better your work environment become, since they tend to be less formal.

I totally understand people working in something important like film for peanuts, because they hope that they'll make it to the top one day and get to leave an impact on something.

But translation? There's nothing important about translation. If you fuck up, nobody is ever going to know, maybe in 20 years someone will notice your mistake and call you up for an interview in a light Kotaku piece. It's some of the least fulfilling work I can imagine.

If you're doing corporate stuff, it's a different story, the pay is at least reasonable. Still not a job I'd want, but I can understand going in that direction if you have no other marketable skills.

Corporate translators need to have tons of other marketable skills (mine are insurance and IT) to even function because of terminology (I get 500K JPY but over 1M isn't unheard of).

People with okay language skills and nothing else become teachers, and video game and other media translators are at the absolute bottom of the hierarchy as people with language skills too shitty to become teachers and nothing else that can get them a proper job.

It's extremely hard to quantify though; like most artistic jobs you can often only point to how long it's been since you've replaced as evidence you're better than other careerists, and that says nothing about you being better than fresh talent.

I'd definitely say there's both an artistic, a breakout media, and a genre top to aim for though, getting on Dazai or Murakami or so on at a major publisher, or the next Ghost in the Shell in genre work, or one of the long-running and selective AAA teams like the guys who do FF14.

I'm a brokebrain who will finish a project that was wildly successful and then sit drinking and grinding F2P and ignoring the RFQs the counterpart puts out for their followup until I start wondering whether my card might get declined buying rum or waifu JPGs, so in that way I can take it. On the other hand, I'm counting down the months until I can check that "10 years professional experience" box on a visa application and go type about brakes or fishing lures on a 正社員 basis.

It's definitely the thing you're thinking of, but it definitely gets a lot more unhinged. (And is late Taisho only, but even the Japanese don't really draw lines anywhere between 1900 and the soft coup.)
