Sega really, really fucked up with 5. 4 was a decent designated "end" to the previous games. The series sort of lived out it's popularity at that point, which was big in early/mod 90's Japan. When 1, 2 and 3 were in full swing they were almost a fad. However 4 was was extremely short and not really a full game.

5 came out after an extended delay, and it tanked the series. Lots of westerners like 5, but it was just fairly mediocre compared to the better Sakura Taisen entries, plus the girls seemed liked they needed more time in the development room. They weren't right and didn't follow up 1 and 3's cast in a strong way. Ultimately the Japanese hated it yet ironically it was the only Sakura Taisen game to come out in English.

Here's to hoping there's a translation for the whole series one day.

Shenmue was easy because the series was west popular and translated. For Sakura Taisen they'd have to translate the games entirely, and they're not short.

Plus they're Visual Novels with very dated mechanics. That's a very longshot for a success.

Historically the strategy segments' gameplay has been pretty bland, but the datesim elements have been a lot more forward-thinking and creative than genre standard (timed responses, new reponses opening up DURING the timer, some events where it's better to just keep your mouth shut, free-look segments more similar to old adventure games like Shadowgate, free roaming around a theatre or city map and encountering small events rather than one block of text, and just the pressure of having to keep all the girls moderately happy with you so they're not distracted during battle instead of autopiloting through picking whatever your waifu wants.)

This one is timeskip+new cast+apparently bad end during one of the older games.
