Iizuka separated the Classic era of Sonic as it's own timeline/dimension. Adventure 1 is the first game for Modern Sonic now, Classic is his own timeline.

Iizuka is just being very autistic for no real reason seeing as Classic Sonic crossed over with Modern twice now, and once even with Classic Tails. Basically. They know the boost (or in LW's case, the run button) will propel players through the stage regardless, so they don't even bother with working physics beyond a very superficial level. It's pretty sad how watered down the gameplay has become in general.

Yeah you can tell in SA1 they attempted to implement physics but they sort of gave up at some point in favor of scripted events and spectacle set pieces. That I can forgive, but by Heroes it's almost entirely a non-issue to Sonic Team and everything else took precedent from then on. Just a shame.

Many think it's because translating 2D Sonic gameplay into 3D is more difficult than Mario's since it's not strictly about slower, more methodical, platforming. Some speculate that it was the lack of technology at the time SA1 came out. It might be why Sonic Team eventually gave up on it during development. Of course, there was no excuse when they started developing on sixth generation hardware and forward. But by then, no one outside of a small minority of fans even gave a shit about it. Most fans are more concerned with voice acting and """"canon."""" You know, the real issues.

I've long since come to accept the fact that Sonic Team doesn't even see it as a problem to be addressed, and that we're going to continue to get more mediocre games from them until either Sega goes bankrupt or the heat death of the universe happens. At this point, I'm just waiting on some fans to finally get their shit together and make a proper 3D Sonic game. As long as I have that, then there's hope yet.
