Something about it just really didn't sit well with me. I think maybe how inferior its atmosphere was to the first.
In one you get genocide within a minute and it really feels like the world is ending while in 2 you spend the first 3rd just running around some small ranch and it never really feels all that threatening.

Yes, author of the Parasite Eve novels didn't like the direction of the games and pulled the rights. That's also why Aya got written out and there was no mention of mitochondria in the third game. Although as I was looking to confirm, I saw that SE renewed the actual Parasite Eve copyright a few months back which might mean they came to a new agreement with the author, even if it's just to release some remakes.

It's been a few years but I remember following along pretty well when I replayed it, but this response is what makes playing it as a kid so funny. I have such a shitty memory so I don't remember how I took it all but I remember thinking it was very cool and I absolutely loved the game. Even my older brother who has always found JRPGs to be very much not his thing really liked it even if it is a pseudo-JRPG.
