I don't play XCOM but these threads are always a blast. Are the modern entries a good starting point for a strategy brainlet, are they almost completely different, or should I look into a different strategy series first?

The modern ones are a lot more steamlined, but the concept remains the same
That said, I loved nu-com and it's the reason I got into OG

Classic xcom is completly different game from modern ones. Just play the classic ones you will learn as you go. There will be lots of death and dont be afraid to abort if the mission has gone to shit. Modern xcom are pretty good games too but i dont like the RNG shooting mechanics.

The biggest problem is that they removed all "unnecessary" features (like the inventory) and balanced the rest so that you HAVE to use them to win
The best part of OG-Xcom is that you can improvise and use a lot of different strategies
