Though honestly I feel like Tales Of games are all pretty mediocre jrpgs when it comes to plot so you mostly play it for the characters.

Getting through that first playthrough felt pretty rough after putting in hundreds of hours for the PS3 version. But getting all the sidequests done and everything makes it feel completely worth it again. Now any time I get the feeling to play it again I can just get a comfy experience. Just takes some time for the game to really get moving and gameplay to pick up.

One thing Abyss did well is that every single party member had a personal stake against Van and his plans. In most other Tales the characters stick around even after their 'arc' is complete just because, or they have some half-assed reason.
The mains are either related to, associated with, or responsible for Van and his actions. Except Anise, she probably just feels guilty for being a filthy spy.
