Only for spinoffs. Not enough normies enjoy turn based combat these days.

Design comes first. ATB won't help if your game is a bunch of empty space or shitty hallways where story elements only come up as they become relevant. The design of 5-9, where subplots intermingle and setting matters, is far more important.

The paradox is that 5, 6, 8 And 9 would benefit the most, but they would be the least likely to turn out right. The devs would need to understand exactly what works about their systems and what doesn't while faithfully replicating the art style and choreographing every scene in real 3D, translating all meta and UI jokes skillfully.

This. There's a problem when I care more about Esthar than Bevelle, Rabanastre, Cocoon and Insomnia combined, much less any other location post-9. Burmecia is still poignant to this day and Midgar still hasn't been topped.
