Endless Legend.
what sin did the nameless one commit that was so bad
I wish they made a sequel I really liked the characters and the setting
pic related
it is quite unique but I dont think that's what op had in mind (because it's mostly colorless, grim and gritty)
still one of my favoutite rpg's
Oddworld, Zeno Clash, Sacrifice, Hollow Knight, Nier, Zeno Clash and Xenoblade Chronicles.
FF VI-VIII, X and XII each mix fantasy with sci fi but aren't as weird as the ones above.
Bloodborne starts off as gothic horror and transforms into lovecraftian horror.
the original Sin of the nameless one is so huge it cannot and should not be named
there's absolutely no way you could do it justice, his crime would have to be something metaphysically horrifying to the very gods themselves
It's like trying to make a visual representation of an eldritch horror
Haven't played Kenshi but Morrowind and Planescape are my two favorite games. How is it weird and unique.
Does the game say it was one particular sin? I thought it was a lifetime worth of sins.
My Zeno-nigga. So good you had to list it twice.
New game when?
Ravenloft: Stone Prophet
he did something so horrifying not even an eternity of good deeds could absolve him
it's much more severe than just a lifetime of bad deeds
Sacrifice, though it wasn't as much the setting as it was the creatures living there.
Tides of Numenera, though that's obviously reminiscent of Planescape as a whole.
Could also mention wizardry since it combines fantasy+sci fi, don't think I've seen that in a video game ever since. Haven't seen anyone mention Fallout yet either, kinda got corrupted by bethesda--but fallout1/2 are tight.
Overall, not really that many games with unique settings. I think it's because it's too risky to let the developers go too crazy. Late 80s and up to early 00s were alright because games were still relatively cheap and the video game industry was quite niche. Nowadays the market is huge and mass appeal has a big importance.
This
Isn't the most popular theory that he started the blood war?
that's pretty bad, but I wonder how'd it be possible. demons are older than time and the nameless one is a human(supposedly).
>it combines fantasy+sci fi, don't think I've seen that in a video game ever since
Play literally any JRPG
for me the only horrible crime so horrible would be the blood war. it doesn't quite make sense but at the same time it makes the most sense. what other crime would be so great?
maybe he set in motion events that are, eventually, guaranteed to END the blood war?
never touched anything that came from japan
i guess it's fitting since wizardry was a huge influence on their game industry.
maybe he did something to make one side eventually win, and then that side will slide all planes into evil.
never thought of that, it's worse than starting the blood war. it's turning every plane of existence into evil.
>Overall, not really that many games with unique settings
user, at least a dozen was mentioned in this thread.
yeah agreed. the war is the source of literally everything bad happening everywhere, in a way it's the original sin.
i always liked the judeo-christian connection. you go throughout the game lying about your name being 'adahn', but it could be just be an in-game version of adam. and that would be a nice reference to the central question of the game, since adam means 'man' in hebrew.
>My Zeno-nigga. So good you had to list it twice.
Well shit, you're right. Guess you could put Hyper Light Drifter instead of one of them.
That's a shame, Japan makes such better games than the West does.
How is it even possible that two factions could single-handedly destroy every other faction combined in the multiverse?
That's where 90% of the world media's weirdness comes from. There's a reason why Planescape and Morrowind also happen to be influenced by japanese art to a large degree.
Sunless Sea/Sunless Skies
>someone saved my screenshot
Oh gosh
Homosexuality
There's nothing special about the nameless one except what he did to cheat death. Every evil person goes to the same plane, he just chose to go to the most extreme lengths to avoid that fate.
>It's like trying to make a visual representation of an eldritch horror
oh right, so it's the good old "dude it's so X i just cannot (put the effort to) describe it"? thats the laziest write's trick after time travel stuff
Except for the fact that it's explicitly stated that his crime was so heinous he could never atone for it, even with an eternity of good deeds
>fantasy+sci fi, don't think I've seen that in a video game ever since.
Sure, besides:
>KOTOR
>Xenoblade Chronicles
>Half of the Final Fantasy games
>Lost Odyssey
>Chrono Trigger
>Shin Megami Tensei
>Shadowrun
>Guilty Gear
>Nier
What would it change though?
probably rape then
How the fuck is Planescape inspired by Japanese art.
Just watch interviews with Chris Avellone. I can't link you specific ones but there's one where he basically spoils the plot of Final Fantasy VI. In general the fact that the game has a specific protagonist, the set types of weapons and armor for different characters, cutscenes before spells. On top of that a story where despite having a fantastic setting the focus of the story is more personal.
Planet Escape Tournament
Morrowind
Arcanum

Pyre is probably the weirdest i have seen in a while
The Ultima World of Adventures games.
I hate these west vs japan pics so fucking much
Whoever makes these should be gassed
While I agree that old western rpgs are more diverse, those pictures are always full of shit and you know it.
massive seethe
So left is template generic genres and right is creative melting pots of ideas? To the point where you can only define them by using that encompasses every possible genre besides pure realism?
You're both retards.
oh no...
What about, let's say, Parasite Eve ? Or Valkyrie Profile ? Or Nier ? Japan has a big tendency of always doing the same shit over and over but that doesn't mean nothing else gets done.
>Freedom Force
Why did this game fly under the radar. It's really fun, but nobody ever talks about it.
Give me a wrpg besides Planescape and maaaybe Morrowind that can't be defined by a generic genre name.
planescape is generic crpg, just because it has WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS dont think it plays any differently from the average baldurs gate, icewind dale etc. it's actually much much more limited than those in regards to gameplay
Yeah, replace generic Tolkien-Likes with generic weeb shit that can't be taken seriously.
For every good JRPG there are 10 shitty ones
To be fair with Nier, they did make a version with a teenage boy and that's supposedly the canon one
Which is why it's better, it doesn't overstay its welcome because the gameplay is the worst part about those games.
So is the Enhanced Edition of Planescape worth playing? I always wanted to play the original, but I'm autistic and can't stand playing games on anything lower than my monitor's native resolution.
I hear that they supposedly fucked some things up, but I'm willing to put up with some issues if it means not having to see everything in stretched 4:3.
VtMB
E.Y.E.
The same shit can be said of japanese games faggot. The vast majority of them is just throwing different generic stuff in it.
And you're even a bigger faggot if you think a game cannot be good or original while staying in a genre for that I'll even give you a jrpg example since you seems to love them so much, Tactic Ogre.
I don't like that game anyway, just that I recognize it has a unique environment.
Play the OG version with those mods to fix it.

I'm talking about the setting genre. If I tell someone that Deus Ex is cyberpunk, Mass Effect is a Space Opera, Arcanum is steampunk or that Dragon's Age is fantasy they won't be too far off in how they looks like. With Planescape it would be a lot harder.
Thanks, I'll do that, but why exactly is the Enhanced Edition not as good as the original? Just curious.
all japanese rpg that are not dragon quest
well if you're aware "fantasy" isn't limited to tolkien trash it describes pst well until you go deep in lore discussion much like morrowind
VtMB is just dark urban fantasy. I'll give you e.y.e though, it's original in more ways than one.
Except very few games like E.Y.E., you can always put them in a genre like you just did with VtMB. Still you very probably can't give me another game like VtMB that's not drastically different.
In that case there just isn't any original setting. Eveything is realistic, sci fi or fantasy.
I mean let's be rational here for a moment. What kind of fantasy setting is similar to Planescape?
True, but it still fits into the template genre. Deus Ex is the same. There aren't that many cyberpunk rpgs but that doesn't change the fact that it's really conservative in it's approach to the genre.
>What kind of fantasy setting is similar to Planescape?
Well, considering Planescape is a Dungeon and Dragons campaign setting
Well then give me jrpgs besides Nier (and even Nier is borderline) that can't be defined by a generic genre name.
Is there any game with a setting similar to Book of the New Sun?
there's lots of people mad at beamdog for supposedly unjustly profiting off of the sales and shit, lots of oldfags are kinda mad
i don't think you should bother with OG version. EE is objectively more refined and less annoying.
A) lots of text was fixed by avellone in EE, there's some text errors and shit in the original
B) ez looting
those two things make it worth it to get EE. if you want to stick it to the man then get the OG version so beamdog jews dont get your shillings
>there's some text errors and shit in the original
There's some text errors and shit in EE as well
A lot of JRPGs are re-skinned Wizardry.
With the mods to fix it, the original has all the good things about the new version.
you can mass loot with qwin's fixpack? I also liked the zoom function, honestly. There's some real nice level design in the game.
The interesting thing about the NO "original sin" is that all gods (good and evil) consider it to be an abomination.
Somewhere I've read that the division of Giths into Githzerai and Githyanki qualifies.
I'm pretty sure all the gods have abandoned TNO because an immortal amnesiac makes for a terrible follower, particularly when belief is such an important part of how things work in the setting
Anyone know if Kenshi is good? I think it looks fine but I'd like to hear some opinions from anons who've played it.
didn't play it but it look like one of those game where it's only good if it's what you expect from it.
Arx Fatalis
Might & Magic (I recommend VII)
Age of Decadence
Outward, it has a pretty unique fusion of techno magic, chinese and european fantasy. It came out a few days ago to mixed reviews, but I havent had any problems and most if the negative reviews are because the game doesn't pigeonhole you or hold your hand, and you can fuck yourself over real bad in the beginning.
Some things font need to be explained and arr better off up to the imaginations. It makes it more interesting in a way.
I like all of those games
based no taste or preferences poster
They didn't fuck up anything with the Planescape EE, it was the Baldur's Gate EE that was fucked with. All Planescape got was resolution fixes and some typos changed.
Wasn't the original sin the desire of immortality which started everything
Yeah, that could be it. I don't know much about dnd lore, though
No. His seek for immortality was the result of his sin and desire for redemption/not going to hell.
