It's ex-Disney artists, so part of their style also lends itself to Disney as well. Using animal species as shortcuts for casting archetypes/stereotypes on a character.

This, I've always seen this type of mindset far from actual furfaggotry, the second you start spending hundreds for shitty commission art and step into a fursuit is when you become dead to me. It really sucks I've always liked it when people used animals as caricatures for characters, lends itself to a lot of interesting designs and Blacksad is a clear cut example of this.

Aside from when they fuck up and keep this inconsistent problem where females are either just straight-up humans with shit on them, or are animals.

To be fair, Blacksad meets black supremacists (animals with black fur) in the next scene and they want to cover his only white spot with tar. Blacksad is like 98% black and it's not enough for them. The comic tried to portray everyone as wrong, and the message at the end of the story is that innocent bystanders get hurts while both sides are fighting.
