In the new timeline, because Raiden killed Motaro before he had the chance to kill Cage, Shao Kahn sees the centaur's early death as a sign to take more drastic action
He gives Shang Tsung's life essence, killing him in the process, to Sindel who then proceeds to slaughter a bunch of characters
Numerous MKX endings hinted at his return but it probably doesn't mean much like everything else hinted being ignored
