I remember in "Primeape Goes Bananas" where Primeape stole Ash's hat, and there's a bit where he goes into what the hat is from and/or what it means to him, but quickly replaces it without issue for the Advanced Generation series. One of the many unexplained plot lines of Pokémon, whether it's that, the GS Ball, or what happened between Brock and Ivy.

The Pokemon Anime should have done what Digimon did and switched up the protagonists every season, as they each have their personalities, ambitions, and overall differences. Something like Pokemon Adventures but animated would have been ideal.
