They were thinking to test the waters of Pokemon games on the Switch by releasing a spin-off first before committing to putting the next gen of Pokemon exclusively on the Switch. I'd wager that if LGP/E went poorly, we would have a 3DS/Switch dual release or maybe even an exclusive 3DS release.
