I pay $2 a month for a site that I download 1TB a month from. I could play Mario Maker 24/7 for 10 years and probably not even hit that. I could see $1 a year, but $20 for a few MB is retarded.

Poke bank was specifically a paid service to store pokemon. It wasn't some basic multiplayer feature. It was a premium service back when they had no other premium services. Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu lets you connect online to check for mystery gifts without the sub. And Smash still lets you get all the events and other items on the spirit board without it. I'm fairly certain it's just the multiplayer that's locked behind the paywall.
