I think the main problem here is the whole language barrier thing. Sakurai is Japanese and I don't think he knows how to speak English very well (he almost always relies on a translator for everything). He's probably much more comfortable negiotating with big name Japanese companies in his home country like SEGA and Capcom rather than English speaking ones from across the globe. That's probably the reason we haven't had a western composer brought on for the soundtrack.

Sakurai and japan as a whole fucking love minecraft, so I feel like Steve has the upper hand in [CURRENT YEAR]. Had it been back in melee times, and minecraft were hypothetically around back then, it would have been 50/50. But now that Banjo is dead to everyone except his original fans, it's hard to say he's got a chance, let alone one against steve.
That being said, I still have this feeling that Steve is just plain impossible, and I can't quite put into words as to why.

Was he really though? I mean, the whole point of the more important half of minecraft is survival and taking nothing and building your whole world from it. The design of steve perfectly reflects that, as he looks like a guy with tattered and unkempt clothes that has been stranded on some land/island. The only thing that really seems placeholder-esque would be his name, and that's only because of how basic it sounds. He is supposed to just be some regular guy surviving off of his wits and nothing more, after all, so why not give him a regular name?
However, if by place holder you mean being the default look to later add your own custom skin to, then I guess I understand. But even still, the characterization stated above would still always be there from the start.
