Can't speak for Naruto or Digimon, but in Dragonball, Gohan when from successor at the end of the Cell arc to throw-away character by the end of the Buu arc. He's far from being a main character, and then Goten's lucky to even appear.

He did it during sinnoh though and the only one who could beat him was sone fag using ubers.
Besides even in Sinnoh he didn't completely replace them, he just cycled through his old and new mons and created teams that were the most effective against his opponent.
