The Vita game Tearaway pulled this off well with a similar arts and craft artstyle as current Yoshi, but a good soundtrack that still fits the theme

The difference is the 1st one is Miyamoto lead and a Super Mario Bros game, which will never happen again.
The ones which came after are spin-offs. They'll never live up to the first one because the devs who could make it best will be making 2D Mario and 3D Mario games.

So far I feel like New Island has a better OST than Crafted World. People always talk about the farts and kazoos but the rest of the soundtrack is fine. This one is just mediocre the whole way through.

Alright look, the games spent way more effort on the engine and experimental crafted look than they did the level designs. So I guess they're more "young soul" than "old soul". Which isn't inherently bad, but this time it didn't work.
