People into anime and classic JRPGs. Even though you do get in-game incentives for getting a girlfriend, or fucking them like in P3 (I dunno, I have not played 4), the player isn't actually required to max out any girl in order to finish the game.

I dislike worlds and systems where only a chosen few get to have special powers. Its one thing if say, they do but choose not to or if its just sort of a thing but its not as pronounced, or if you dont NEED the powers per se but they let you contribute in special exclusive ways...or hell, if the story REALLY kicks ass... but this wasnt a game like that.

Persona Games are SMT games with everything about them being better in every way.

Since the start, SMT has been this grueling grind of a dungeon crawl with minimal story and little or no exploration or character building.

Persona fixes that by letting the player take a break from dungeon grinding to engage in minigames, social links, and explore the setting.

Additionally, Persona games brought the biggest quality of life improvements to the SMT series.
Things like being able to pick inherited skills during fusion instead of playing with the RNG and hoping for one good combination after 500 tries, putting a minimap up, combo skills, allowing NPC allies to auto-battle, skill cards to customize demons without needing to use fusion calculators, etc.

Like incels, except they don't care about disgusting whores and their temptations of STD laden sex or jeers of "haff shex" because they're too busy being shit like engineers, oil rig workers, researchers, or elder wizards.

I'm close to finishing Nocturne and am unsure if I'll move on to the 3DS games or try out Persona next and P3P stuck out to me. Not being able to control party members sounds like it would drive me mad.

If you defeat him early the game will skip days to the end of the game, but if you defeat him on the very last days you may lose the chance to spend Christmas with someone because the town is shit and you are still dealing with Adachi.

If you're used to SMT you can probably start with 3, a lot of people have trouble with how obtuse and bullshit it can be but you're probably used to that shit.

4 Golden is probably the best with the most content, but it's still Vita/PSTV exclusive. The vanilla version is good too though.

Whatever you do, don't play the portable version of 3, known as P3P. You want the FES version, which is definitive. P3P has some neat stuff like an optional female protagonist but it cuts out nearly all the cutscenes and makes the gameplay a lot easier in ways that were never intended.

5 is available on PS3/PS4 with negligible difference between the two.

1 and 2 are good but they're a lot closer to SMT than Persona

Best way to play would probably be 3/4/5, but you can play them in any order. There are a few references to past games in each one but nothing that's worth forcing yourself to play in order if you don't want to. Each game has a different aesthetic and mood, just go with what appeals to you the most.

Why does everyone keep saying this? P1 and P2 are similar to SMT as much as Pokemon games also are: grid based movement and random encounters. No alignments, combat and negotiation systems are fairly different, more focus on storytelling, leveling up personas etc. The tone is not even that dark as people claim too, DeSu is what comes to my mind when people say Persona-ish but closer to SMT in tone.

Tbh I was surprised that how much they influenced 3-5 when I played P1 and P2IS. They really created the foundations for the series well even though games themselves are really janky. I mean, everything from the shadows, arcanas and collective unconscious themes had stayed nearly the same, and arguably there is an overarching megacorps plot in the background.

That's not an influence. That's just the central mechanics the Persona series is built off of. You can't say Nocturne was heavily inspired by SMT I because they both use demons infesting the real world. It's just what the series does.

You don't have to grind, bur they're still 60-80 hours long and I find much of P3 tedious.

Technically you don't have to grind the dungeons, but the whole "life simulator" aspects make the games longer than you'd expect. I'd never recommend playing Persona in anything shorter than 4 hour sessions.

They're not challenging, I don't like P3's combat, but I think P4's combat is fine for what it is. The life simulator aspect of the game breaks it up enough that the combat is welcomed when you're doing it because you spend plenty of time doing other things as well.
