Don't give a shit what it is, it's fucking garbage.
The story is shit and has no real connection to Half-Life 1 nor its expansions.
HL1 aged better.
This was made to sell the source engine. Period. Full stop.
That does not mean it is a bad game.
The only good thing about this game is all the mods it opened up the engine to.
>HL2.exe has stopped working
game is trash btw just play HL1 again
>physics puzzles that were impressive at the time that are more a pain in the ass today
>"cutscenes" up the ass where you must wait for some characters talk it out so you can go back to playing the game
Fuck I hate 2. Fuck I love 1.
>this was made to sell the source engine
Tell me how many AAA games let alone well selling games in general that were made from 2004 - 2010 that was not made by Valve.
Vampire the Masquerade does not count, literally came out the same day as HL2.
are you serious?
There were a lot.
Halo 3
COD4
Mass effect 1 and 2.
Smash Brawl.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Twilight Princess
Do I need to go on?
Yeah I'm serious, name them. Mod's don't count either. If they were trying to sell their engine like what Unreal was doing, you can easily list all the high brow titles that were released.
Nigger what
If you think HL2 is better in HL1 in any way you are a fucking retard.
That's UE3 (??)
Sin Episodes
Dark Messiah
Only code to mind. Not that much really
are (You) actually retarded?
the fuck?
>no real connection
>literal direct connection from Black Mesa's events to the world after 20 years
???
Aren't all games technically tech demos?
>still enjoy all HL games and the nostalgia of coming home from school to play them excitedly
>see them shit on relentlessly by battle royale niggers
I sincerely hope your mothers get raped by packs of feral niggers.
Sin was alright and Dark Messiah was fun but nonetheless it's two games, the real scene WAS the mod scene, but it wasn't Valve's direct goal to sell the engine.
Thought you were better than this, user.
Oh I was confused.
I thought he was asking how many AAA games were released in that time period.
Not how many AAA games made on the source engine.
Obviously this advertisment failed. Because UE3 was way more ubiquitous.
It's still a good game tho.
Tell me please what you would have done with the story in Half Life 2 after the events of HL1? I agree they should have branched off with OpFor and BluSh type expansions.
>Half Life 2 expressed purpose was an advertisement
I mean I would argue the main purpose was to make a good game first.
Their secondary objective was to show off the engine to potential licensees.
I'd say it's tertiary. because the people who ended up really using it were the fans.
>nu-Yea Forums hates half life 2
>nu-Yea Forums likes halo
this board is fucking dead
There always was a sentiment on Yea Forums that HL2 was shit. Doesn't make it correct.
Half Life 2 reminds me more of nugames than any of the original Halo games. So why is it a bad thing that the gameplay centric one is enjoyed more?
being "gameplay centric" doesn't matter when it's casualized to shit. I won't defend HL2's walkie talkie cutscenes but at least when you were in a firefight the mechanics were solid and the setpieces were creative.
>haha remember HL2, now that game didn't take away player controls in cutscenes!
>cutscene starts in any game
>press button to skip it
>dialogue starts in HL2
>stuck in the room for next 2+ minutes
Half Life 2 isn't any less casual than Halo. Making a single button dedicated to using grenades is not that huge a jump in casualization.
You're right, it was actually a movie
>mechanics were solid
HL2 is well known for shitty gunplay.
>setpieces were creative
Most of the times they didn't work at the right time, and current version of the game on Steam is outright broken. Most Combine don't even spawn in Nova Prospekt teleport room.
If you’re really that banal about it you can simply press a button and type in a code to skip it. Even then the dialogue sections aren’t that long and give you stuff to fiddle around with.
>Slow movement speed
>Two weapon limit
>Regenerating shields
Halo isn't just casual, it's the kind of casual that makes the game dull.
Yeah, the current version on Steam is completely busted. Valve ought to be ashamed of the state of these games.
Is there a console command I can bind to skip all that shit?
>HL2lets
calling HL2 a tech demo is like calling mario 64 a tech demo, people here are retarded
after the initial wow factor has worn off, hl2 is really nothing special aside from the immersive audio and visual design, one of the most overrated games of all time.
host_timescale is the command
The default setting is host_timescale 1
You need sv_cheats 1 on.
I love the game, I'll admit it's not as amazing as I thought it was in 2004 but I don't think anyone would have a bad time picking it up today.
Also I really wanted to fuck Mossman, IDK why.
host_timescale 10
>just use console bro
Might just save time and use uninstall instead.
If you’re such a retard that you can’t bind a key to a simple command then you are beyond saving, typical to post an OW image luh mao
The fact that the engine didn't sell has nothing to do with the fact that it was possibly made for selling. Are you really this dense? Also the real reason for Valve releasing games like they do is because they want them to feel unique. That's why we didn't get HL3 and never will.
>lol bro just use console haha
>ad hominem
Uh-huh, fascinating.
>Game not fast!!!
The most arbitrary complaint. Not every shooter needs to have adhd level speed. I never understood why people shit on two weapon limits so much. I hate how it was standardized for a while, but it's just how those games handle their weapons sandbox. Shields are lame but didn't become the mainstay until 2.
Do you think you deserve an actual response to your non argument?
>slow movement speed
>blatantly ignoring speed enhancing tricks and the shift key
Learn to follow the argumeng. Someone made a point that it was created only to sell the engine, I displayed how that was clearly incorrect.
>make level as badass as ravenholm
>Include it less than halfway through the game
>Never even come close to matching or surpassing it for the rest of the game.
The fugitive on the run thing in general was cool, why did they just abandon that for a generic war-game type thing?
There had to be an eventual direct confrontation with the main antagonist.
Telling people that game is good because you can use literal cheats to skip past its bad parts is not an argument either. Seems like your self-awareness is about as good as your logic. Stop wasting my time.
>We will never get beta HL2
Hurts
Again you feel entitled to an apt response?
idk man, I thought everything up until the city uprising bullshit was pretty even. Yeah Ravenholm was one of the most memorable parts of the game the first time through but after all the years the novelty has kinda worn off. Now, Highway 17, THAT was a chapter.
The ruskies are doing a pretty decent enough job at archiving all that leaked stuff, so at least there's that.
HL2 has plenty of movement tech too. Especially on the old engine.
Exactly my point, unfortunately we can’t backaccel in the newer versions but it’s still got a few cards up it’s sleeve
>Unreal was just made to sell the unreal engine!
I love highway 17 as well.
very boring. play gmod and spawn civil protection all over and shoot them with handgun, look I made hl2 lol
I mean. I'm pretty sure that was a secondary objective.
It was
Half Life 2 was a tech demo for Black Mesa Source :^)
A lot of people have some pretty solid complaints about Half Life 2, but then again most people who comment about it today have just played it and are viewing it from a modern perspective.
Graphically, it still stands up and even looks better than some AAA games released in the last year, but from a gameplay point of view it can seem a bit dated.
I still really enjoy the gunplay in Half Life 2, they found a perfect balance of weapon-feel and engaging combat for the fights to never really get old, and since there are often set pieces or breaks inbetween a lot of fights, the pacing is just right for a long playthrough.
But if you really don't like the game, I'd say try episode 1 and 2 instead. Half Life 2 during development went through so many versions, they had to sacrifice a lot of ideas and polish in order to release the game in 2004. While the episodes got a lot more attention and detail, which might be easier for person who's used to modern fps's to digest.
