What does/v/ think of subtitles in video games? Do you turn them on or off?
>Grew up in an ESL country >Have hard time making sense of ingame dialogue because listening skills weren't as good as reading skills >Market was proliferated by pirated PS2 DVDs, legit copies nowhere to be found >Games with subtitles are far and beyond, save for some titles like Metal Gear & RPGs >gitgud in English >Replay old games >Finally get the stories
I honestly need them for the Ingurlish/Scottish VAs that are so prevalent in Western RPGs for some reason.
Jordan Garcia
Is English your first language?
Jayden Ward
Not a native speaker. I need them because I'm not confident I'm able to catch everything.
Jason Robinson
ah the good old days when i was young and i didnt know where the fuck to go because i didnt understand english
Nathaniel Taylor
English wasn't my native tongue so I got used to using subtitles. It made my written english better too. The only downside is that despite living in an english-speaking country for 6 years and never having an issue with conversations, I feel like I still need the subs when I watch a movie.
Jose Myers
I always have subtitles on, even if I don't need them. I also find full subtitles (IE even actions) hugely hilarious. But not many games do full captions.
Jeremiah Murphy
i always put them on in case some nignog appears and starts talking in their ghetto accent, also in middle of gameplay or noisy cutscenes with a lot of shit going on reading the subtitles is better
Dylan Adams
This. Unless the game had something like a compass or written objective, it's kinda hard to figure out what the spoken objectives meant
Levi Roberts
>Not native tongue >English-speaking country What country, user?
It's one thing not understanding what they say, sometimes I get influenced by the way they speak and get their accent & lingo for a few weeks when I speak English.
I had a hard few weeks speaking English after finishing GTAV.
Jackson Baker
I'm from France but I lived in Ireland for 6 years. I apologize for the confusion user.
Levi Nguyen
I like them on because it gives you a second to reread dialogue you might have missed or not understood.
Caleb Sullivan
>Final Fantasy XIII >"Oh no! the Pulse Fal'cie turned us into L'Cie. We need to complete our Focus or we'll be turned into Cie'th, but we have to save Cocoon and prevent Ragnarok" Because of this like this.
Caleb Harris
>I'm from France but I lived in Ireland for 6 years. Ah, no wonder. Though, in case of vidya, don't you have the option to change the languages to French since you're still living in the EU (Region 2)?
We don't have that luxury in Southeast Asia (Region 3 discs generally have English/Chinese/Korean options, none for SEA languages)
>I apologize for the confusion user. All cool
Samuel Williams
I need it for when the characters mumbles or whispers.
Connor Murphy
>2004 >WoW comes out >I am 12 and what is this >suddenly know English >suddenly as in it's like 3 years later somehow, what the shit >what are girls subs are pretty handy though, the audio mixing can be pretty questionable, really hard to hear what's being said sometimes
Ryder Cox
talking about not being a native speaker in the mighty 90s as anti piracy measure games will stop and ask you some questions and the answer was in the manual book. mfw i had to learn some english to read and comprehend the question or i couldn't even finish the game i've bought
>middle of gameplay or noisy cutscenes with a lot of shit going I feel like audio mixing is a forgotten art, and most games nowadays have really hard to hear dialogue even in "neutral" situations.
Aaron Young
These I understand, but lots of players hate subs and I can't figure out why. Plus, games generally have subs turned off by default.
>in the mighty 90 measure games will stop and ask you some questions and the answer was in the manual book.
Besides MGS, what games?
Benjamin Watson
I always use subtitles because without them I need to pay some extra attention. Although sometimes when people keep whispering and speaking in weird accents I understand very little. >mfw watching The Expanse without subtitles
I accept them, I would like to play without subtitles but I'm just retarded without the ability to read in a medium, especially if there isn't a "re-read the script" option.
There's a Jap voice option? It's been a while since I played it
Jonathan Jones
Yes changing the language is most of the times a possibility but it wasn't when I started playing videogames (C64fag here) and I got used to english as time went by. French dubs and translations also range from subpar to absolutely retarded, Seiken Densetsu 2 was botched beyond understanding for instance. It's a shame you don't have the option to switch written language as much, vidya is fantastic for picking up a new language.
Luis Adams
on PC you can just change the language in steam but on consoles there's one voice track per region, you'd have to buy the nip version for japanese voices with english text
Caleb Butler
So I'll have to change Steam's interface language?
