Were games actually better in the past?
My favourite consoles are the DS and PS2. They also happen to be the consoles I played as a kid. Does my brain just apply a blanket nostalgia boost to this era even for PS2/DS games I've never played or were the games objectively better than what we have now. I've yet to play a PS4 game I like as much as even an average DS or PS2 game. There just seemed to be so much more creativity and focus on fun passion projects in the past.

In general? Yeah, mid-tier games are a dead endeavor, and those were the ones that really took the risks because since the budget wasnt that big, there was more margin for error. The indie scene has replaced them, but with a far smaller budget, enough to hinder creative freedom. Its all about balance, too much money involved and you cant take risky moves because of all that is on the line, too little money and the time and resources arent enough to do what you want nor find acceptable, clever alternatives, which is what mid-tier budget (or AA games) titles were all about.
And what about all the PS2 games I never played until this year that are super fun?

The truth is, nostalgia is blinding, especially to the metric crapton of shitty games that came out on those systems. The most you can say is that we get more shit nowadays, but that's because we have more games coming out all the time, too. If you go back to the DS and PS2 for every good game you'll find 10 pieces of shovelware that got hyped up by a marketing machine only to die a month later. With hindsight, you can actually pick out the better games, which makes the libraries seem larger and better.

No, nostalgia can really fuck with your head. Games have stayed pretty equal in terms of quality. Some great games have been released as well as some incredibly shitty ones that somehow became very popular. It also depends on what genres you play and what people have done to those specific genres that haven't been seen before (e.g. Portal). Some genres have seen more innovation than other genres.

The trouble is that back then everything was leaps and bounds. At the very least I expected games to be longer and more detailed and of course, better graphics. But I had to get used to games being shorter and treat you like a dummy because PRESS X TO DO something.
Games were definitely better and have gotten worse in terms of content. I'm not happy about it and while there are definitely some positives to come out in some new games, the negatives--especially what Microsoft brought to the table--outweigh any real progression as we've been stagnating on trends rather than making something new for about 10 years.

The answer is no. We still get great games released to this day. People who disagree would cite several arbitrary factors like the increased presence of sociopolitics or the micromonitization of certain games, but one should remember that these particular issues are confined to just a few games or a few companies and are not reflective as a whole to the entire industry.
For example: Super Mario Odyssey was a great game and it contained neither injected sociopolitics or microtransactions. Splatoon 2 was a great game that also didn't have injected sociopolitics or microtransations. It featured DLC, of course, but the content offered was a bonafide expansion of the main game. Same deal with Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that Nintendo is the only publisher/developer that's worth a damn in this industry and people should just drop everything else and play nothing but Nintendo titles on Nintendo hardware if they truly want to enjoy this hobby.

The combat is literally on par with the first Xenoblade Chronicles. I cannot think of a single thing the first game does right when compared to the sequel.

The team compistion feels more important user it really does with 2 it doesnt at all the game is so easy to my issue is that instead of the combat being about going for topples and stuns its about getting your big super flashy attack to charge up than spam it its awful AWFUL game design that is hinderd even more so when skills like "backslash" cant exist in 2's combat since they removed auto attack while moving for no good fucking reason

the thing is that thanks to the lower production value smaller studios had a larger presence in console market. if you look at ps2 library it has 2500 games while ps4 has 1500 (counting in ps3 re releases and psn releases). game business was ironically huge during ps2 whereas now theres only a handful of titles coming out every year and even they are the usual big publisher drivel.

Nintendo always created great games but in the 90s there were tons of great games being made. Lots of companies died and went corporate. Games are so expensive to make now so most companies don't take any risks and just copy whoever is the most successful. In the 90s you could play Goldeneye, Doom, Quake, Unreal Tournament and tons of others, now all we have is battle royale shit
